😑 Anyone want to put bets on whether it's going back to Sydney today, given it's at Melbourne Airport? (Note: this item is not intended for NSW.)
A scheershot from Australia Post showing an item going from NSW to two places in Vic and then back to two places in NSW. And finally back to Melbourne.

Had a really great time chatting (and chatting, and chatting some more) with Casella about the Le Guin Prize shortlist. Honestly I could easily have gone on longer; it’s a list with a lot to discuss, in a great way.

This vaguely dark academia novel set in a school for sorcerers/magicians is just spectacular. Dr. Sapphire "Saffy" Walden is our protagonist. Nearly 40, a workaholic, and with good reason since she's more or less trying to personally keep a 19c magical security system running to keep Chetwood School safe. It's a LOT. Saffy is wry, intelligent, and although she'd be the first person to tell you that she's not all that personable, she's an excellent teacher.

In which Farah Mendlesohn proposes reading Joanna Russ' The Female Man as a variation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol... To read it right now, head to: www.speculativeinsight.com
Purple background, white text, which says Joanna is being visited by three ghosts and may be one herself. I am genuinely not sure how well this works. This being Joanna Russ, one of the cleverest authors in our field, there was never going to be an easy mapping. "There were these three ghosts... Purple background, white text, which says Like Scrooge, Joanna is technically alive. But also like Scrooge she is hiding away from herself, her own life, and from the world. In modern parlance, both Joanna and Scrooge 'mask' out of insecurity and fear. "There were these three ghosts... The Female Man and A Christmas Carol" -- Farah Mendlesohn

There are three words I cannot ever think appropriately, thanks to media. "Anticipation" is an obvious one. Then there's "jurisdiction" (IYKYK). And finally "liaison", which is a pretty deep cut.
