PLAYBOY. Much was offered, it turns out, in 1978. Men in ads were in no way confused: they wanted the girl on the cover of the May Playboy. Inside, Anita Bryant railed against homosexual teachers, took it to the soft-core street. She was the bane of Castro Street. The Sunshine Girl of 1978. We call him a fruit, the homosexual: eater of sperm, God’s forbidden fruit. Confused? The filthiest piece in Playboy, her words made the cover; her career didn’t recover. Something was stirring in the street nothing to do with Playboy—nothing and everything, in 1978: a pretty flag; another assassination. Not to be confused: no self-respecting homosexual says homosexual. But teachers are still undercover, and people confuse us with pedophiles on Main Street. It’s always 1978 in the pages of Playboy. My favorite of these is the villanelle "Undoing," the scrupulous pleasures and refusals therein: the play and pathos "spools past," slow but fast. And there is much to note in other poems too, the "style and stigma" of flowers; the unexpected elegy for a hat, a hat a proxy for us all as we inevitably fall apart. In knowing, winning ways, the poet transforms the everyday into a kind of open secret.
