Ryoichi 'Morgan' Sono started in the lab in 2019 as an undergraduate researcher. Joined as a graduate student during the pandemic in 2021. Defended his Ph.D. thesis recently. Will be in the job market soon. A team person to his core, and an astute, and inventive mind... Here's to you, Morgan!

Double pride! Morgan Sono (my right) and Andie Venegas (my left) after their PhD commencement ceremony yesterday. Morgan and Andie worked together on a major project in the lab and hooding them one after the other was the joy of my life. So proud!

Not sure if reviewers are demanding more, but NIH peer review is seemingly stiffer these days (or, my science is going downhill or too oblong to the typical). That combined with NIH funding lows makes me wonder, what else am I good at?

The best line in the article for me was, "Creative work of every sort (not just science) occurs in a niche where the inner drive to understand or express and the outer drive to be rewarded achieve some balance".

@mcuban.bsky.social, yes, US academic researchers are caught in the headlight and don't know how to react. Give up science? Not train next gen of scientist? Take up industry job? Take up academic job in another country? Or, hold the line, brace, and fight? Can you offer any help to the last kind?
