JES: What do you remember most about your husband, Marvin Rainey?

MARY: His kindness.

2 - Across the street, a young 8 year old Sarah sits on her front stoop. She’s crying.

JES: Really? That’s…

MARY: Strange? I promise you it’s not. That man didn’t have a mean bone in his body.

3 - Marvin plucks a yellow rose from the bush near his front door.

JES: It’s certainly not the picture painted by others. They seem to see Marvin as a completely different person.

MARY: If Sarah was still alive she’d tell you the same.

JES: What do you mean by that?

4 - Marvin waves to Sarah as he crosses the street.

MARY: Sarah and Marv were very close. A father-daughter type of bond.

MARY: Sarah’s actual father, Harold, was not kind to her. Marv had to step up so Sarah wouldn’t get lost.

5 - Sarah looks up, her face all snotty and red. She smiles at the sight of Marvin.

MARY: Hardground has a tendency to chew you up and spit you out. Drugs, poverty, you name it. It’s a tough place to live.

6 - Marvin crouches in front of Sarah and simultaneously holds the rose out to her and rubs her head in a fatherly way. They both smile at the moment.

MARY: Nothing grows here, but you never know. A little compassion can go a long way.

It’s a dark and quiet morning. Snow falls across the small town of Hardground, Michigan. A station wagon drives out of the downtown area and along a two lane highway. As it makes it way, it passes something in the snow. The panels begin to close in and we see the body of teenagers girl, Sarah Shaw, dead in the snow.

TEXT: January, 1986. Hardground, Michigan.

TIFFANY (off-panel): I’ll never forget the moment I found out for as long as I live.

TIFFANY (op): My mother, god rest her soul, came through that front door right there with tears in her eyes.

TIFFANY (op): Before I could even ask her what was wrong she said…

TIFFANY (op): “Tiffany, baby. They found her all tangled up in a briarpatch.”

TIFFANY (op): “Sweet Sarah Shaw is dead.”

In the living room of Tiffany Gloucek, Sarah Shaw’s former best friend. Tiffany is in her 50s and time has made its mark on her. She’s being interviewed by two people, Jes & Dave, about Sarah’s murder. She takes a drag of her cigarette, coughs heavily, puts it out and continues talking.

TEXT: October, 2022.

TEXT: TIFFANY GLOUCEK. SARAH SHAW’S BEST FRIEND.

TIFFANY: The day I found out she died, a part of me died too.

JES: What else do you remember about that day?

TIFFANY: It was the last Saturday of Winter Break…which means she had to’ve been killed the night of our basketball game.

TIFFANY: We had a big match-up against the neighboring town’s school. Pretty much everybody was there.

TIFFANY: The Hardground Hawks and Gentry Generals have been rivals for decades, and rivalries run deep ‘round here.

A sedan, some shitty rental, nothing nice, drives along along a Highway road surrounded by trees on either side. Jes and Dave are inside the car driving into town having just finished their fairly routine interview of Tiffany. They discuss it with some suspicion, grasping at straws to make it more interesting than it was. They pull into town and already are over being here.

TIFFANY: That’s what I remember being most scared about — it could’ve been anybody.

TIFFANY: At the same time, you have to understand what happened to Sarah, that ain’t something we’re familiar with.

TIFFANY: Who could even do something like that? Who could kill an innocent girl?

JES: It would not surprise me if she was the one who actually killed Sarah Shaw.

DAVE: We already know it was her neighbor, Marvin Rainey.

DAVE: And we’re not here to solve anything anyways, Jesenya. We’re just here to tell these peoples’ stories.

DAVE: Same as it ever was.

JES: False, Dave. Rainey was her alleged killer. Just because he disappeared six months later doesn’t mean he did it.

JES: Only means he likes to travel.

JES: Now the “best friend” who remembers exactly what her mom said but forgets to mention that Sarah was a starter while she was on the bench?

JES: That’s suspect.

DAVE: Even if that headline would sell, it doesn’t add up.

DAVE: Did you see how much she smoked during the interview? She’s been doing that forever. I doubt she considered basketball as her golden ticket.

DAVE: Ergo, you’re full of shit.

JES: Whatever, man.

JES: This town is a total bummer. I don’t blame Marvin Rainey for leaving.
