A friend and I jokingly call LLMs "Lemmings" for ease of pronounciation. Today we walked through the crowded city talking about lemmings, and it must have sounded bizarre.

Forgot to use !multi when pasting into @simonwillison.net's `llm` CLI tool, and the output was fascinating. Gemini4 evaluating every line in isolation, wild hallucinations and even switching to cyrillic at some point.

The economic angst many Americans feel has much to do with how the economic pie is being divided. From WWII to Y2K, workers received close to two-thirds of the pie, while capital received the other one-third.

Depresssingly plausible theory in @sarahoconnorft.ft.com’s book: Literacy is declining (possibly because we only read tweets), and we are transitioning to an oral culture. And oral cultures are signified by… all the hallmarks of the last 10 years.
In 2007, writer Caleb Crain wrote an article called "Twilight of the Books' in The New Yorker magazine about what a pos sible 'post-literate culture might look like. In oral cultures, he wrote, cliche and stereotype are valued, conflict and name-calling are prized because they are memorable, and speakers tend not to correct themselves because it is only in a literate culture that the past's inconsistencies have to be accounted for. From the perspective of the mid-ozos, that feels eerily prescient.

Love to swap genders in ads/music etc. Today’s example from TV ads: Woman sells everything her boyfriend loves: funny. The opposite: horrible.

Copilot just gave me the phrase "I am a tractor and I regret nothing". I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to guess what context that statement makes sense.

Discovered that the platform I used to rent out my boat is run by some <30 year old kid and my gut reaction probably illustrates why we don’t have nice things in Europe. Also, the complete lack of investment in the platform is telling.

Remember the kids at the end of the pandemic who had 4 jobs, all remote, and cycled them as they got caught? I wonder what that would look like today, with good LLMs.

The most obvi- Oh for heaven's sake. Just stay away from lighthouses, okay?
Okay, so the light here marks the end of a breakwater and the entrance to a harbour, and the cargo ship wedged bodily across the mole has merely become of victim of the wrong side of a fifty fifty choice. This isn't going to avoid the forthcoming interview sans refreshments. Cookies are right out.

My online bookstore suggests I might like a book on Yugoslav avant-garde music from 1945 to 1991, and I have no idea if that is meant as an insult.

The Team Topologies book makes some points about organization that would be obvious if it had been any other subject. Organizing teams by technology would mean putting everyone who uses Excel in one department. Other teams can order "Excel services" from them.

MDM people: in order to create a good data model, we first need to map the business processes in the company. Cloudflare: fuckit, let’s just make a single table, everybody gets 20 character columns and 20 numerical columns, choose wisely.
From Cloudflare blog: "instead of designing new tables, teams can stream data into a single, massive table. Datasets are disambiguated by a namespace, and each record uses a standard schema (e.g., 20 float fields, 20 string fields, a timestamp, and an indexID)."

I’d be more comfortable moving my data-ramblings to LinkedIn (where everyone else data-rambles these days) if I didn’t have mostly real-world friends and colleagues there. The distance is the point. Context is king.

Databricks says it is best practice that objects should be owned by groups, while any object created is owned by the user that creates it — which is like handing drugs to kids while saying kids shouldn’t have drugs.

I have seen it argued, outside of the US and by sensible people, that quarterly reporting is not only a resource drain but also contributes to short-term thinking in business. That isn’t to say these were the motives here though.
