Depresssingly plausible theory in @sarahoconnorft.ft.com’s book: Literacy is declining (possibly because we only read tweets), and we are transitioning to an oral culture. And oral cultures are signified by… all the hallmarks of the last 10 years.
In 2007, writer Caleb Crain wrote an article called "Twilight of the Books' in The New Yorker magazine about what a pos sible 'post-literate culture might look like. In oral cultures, he wrote, cliche and stereotype are valued, conflict and name-calling are prized because they are memorable, and speakers tend not to correct themselves because it is only in a literate culture that the past's inconsistencies have to be accounted for. From the perspective of the mid-ozos, that feels eerily prescient.

MDM people: in order to create a good data model, we first need to map the business processes in the company. Cloudflare: fuckit, let’s just make a single table, everybody gets 20 character columns and 20 numerical columns, choose wisely.
From Cloudflare blog: "instead of designing new tables, teams can stream data into a single, massive table. Datasets are disambiguated by a namespace, and each record uses a standard schema (e.g., 20 float fields, 20 string fields, a timestamp, and an indexID)."

Had to look up how many cows we were taking here. Fantastic quiz question if anyone is looking.
wikipedia clip reading: n October 2022, Muhoozi received attention for publicly offering 100 cows as a bride price for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who at that point was widely expected to become the next Prime Minister of Italy, threatening to conquer Rome if the dowry was rebuffed.[78]

Azure showed me this today. Ignoring the fact that ads in popups in the portal is icky, this is yet another example of how procurement drives adoption. Giving azure a cut of the profits makes sense because of all the companies that are afraid of their own procurement process.

211 years today, Norway got its own constitution. May 17 is like The Purge but for patriotism. Take all the everyday patriotic symbols you see over the year in USA, and jam them into a single day. That day is today. I have taken refuge in the mountains.

Instead of simply disagreeing with @jayatillake.bsky.social about his implication that internal politics is ok in the public sector, let’s dive into some differences between private businesses and government, and what that means for employees. 🧵
What I think happens is that people come into the private sector who shouldn't be there.
They excel at politics instead of helping their business take risk, they bring in other people who are likeminded, they help those people get promoted, they build up their CV... When it comes to a point where they haven't really delivered much, years have passed but they can apply for a new job having done A years at B company, and X years at Y company and so on. Their CV looks great, they've sat on committees, they've been on more Zoom calls than most, they went on the management offsite, they didn't make enemies.... but no-one can point to what exactly they did do.

Person 2: you realize by that definition you have hundreds of excel workbooks “in production” right?

Argentinian poverty rate above 50% brings out my need to ask which definition of poverty they use. The OECD definition, which is often used up here, can’t even pass 50%.

I am a little surprised by the reception of the recent books about constitutional change - pretty serious legal scholars are coming out hard against the idea. From the outside, treating and interpreting the constitution like a bible seems weird.
