Currently on the 8th watch in a row of Steps' music video for 5,6,7,8 (c. 1998) with my one year old. I mean I know it's obviously a banger, but I'm not sure I can take it much longer. Especially as she's making me do the dance....

Excited to join BEMCC! I’m just leaving a conference Paris exploring the “cloaques” in history. These “cesspits” (tho that’s an imperfect translation — I suggested “shitholes”) had a marked impact on the bodies of urban inhabitants. Also feat @manonraffard.bsky.social of @uomsalc.bsky.social
A poster for an academic conference showing a black and white image of a man in a fetid alleyway. The title of the conference was Le cloaque, in bad-fond d’un autre genre à explorerA PowerPoint slide. Below the university of Manchester logo is the text “entre propriété privé et propreté publique. Les commissions des logements insalubres contre les fosses et cloaques. Dr Will Clement lecturer in modern European history. University of Manchester”
Next to this text is a monochrome illustration of a well dressed man greeting another man who lives ina. CellarA conference programme

Am I really to believe that in the 18th century well off people were peering down at their beautiful newborn babies and deciding that 'Bacon' was a perfect and fitting first name?

Been trying to reconstruct the cost of an eighteenth-century pinery. In today’s money, it’s about £35,000 to build, plus £5,000 a year to maintain. This would yield 150 pineapples a year, if you were lucky. This feels a bit like the Georgian version of NFTs. #FoodHistory #EarlyModern #AcademicSky

Before tobacco made Virginia rich, colonists chased other prospects. One plan? An ‘artificiall wyne’ made from ‘sassaphras & licoras’. It would be cheaper than fancy French wine, ‘harty, holsome pleasinge and comfortable’ and would never make a ‘man drunk’. America’s first root beer? #AcademicSky

In eighteenth-century Europe pineapples were everywhere. They featured in paintings, adorned buildings, appeared on ceramics and silverware, and crowned dining tables. Was pineapple mania simply about rarity and sweetness? Not quite.
