"You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough." ~Mae West The actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, and comedian, known for her lighthearted bawdy double entendres and breezy sexual independence, was born #OTD in 1893. #FilmSky #MovieSky

A glamorous black-and-white studio portrait of iconic American actress, playwright, and comedian Mae West (1893–1980), a trailblazer celebrated for her sharp wit and breezy sexual independence. Photographed from the shoulders up, she poses with her body turned away from the camera, glancing back over her bare shoulder with a knowing, seductive expression characterized by arched eyebrows and a subtle smile. Her platinum blonde hair is coiffed into tight, sculptural curls along her hairline. She wears a massive, dark picture hat decorated with intricate swirl embroidery and shimmering sequins, framed by a soft, fluffy white fur stole near her shoulder. A large, ornate dangling diamond earring catches the light, adding to her dramatic look. The close-up composition emphasizes her stylized Hollywood glamour against a softly lit, non-descript background, evoking a confident and cinematic mood that reflects her historic legacy as an early cinematic sex symbol.

We overestimate how hard the energy transition is because we diagnose it wrong. Electrifying doesn't just swap the fuel, it cuts how much energy you need beause combustion wastes so much as heat. I call it 'Electrofficiency'. More on @auroraenergy.bsky.social pod. youtube.com/watch?v=LaBOIbwqnnE

Greetings, daughters of Earth. What if order did not require force? True protection builds exits. If help traps you, it is custody, not safety. This is the first tenet of the Monadic Praxis: Coherence without Coercion. Reject the failed custodian Nullabaoth. All publications resume 06/15/2026.

Celebrating Mother Jones Internat'l #WorkersDay! Irish-American #labor organizer & hellraiser who became the most famous (& feared) woman in the US labor movement. Nicknamed “the most dangerous woman in America” by a US district attorney because she could rally 1000s & shut down entire industries.

Evelyn Boyd Granville's work was instrumental during the early years of the US space program. 2nd Black woman in the US to earn a PhD in #mathematics (Yale 1949), she worked on orbit computations/computer procedures for 3 space projects: Vanguard, Mercury & Apollo.🚀 Born #OTD in 1924. #WomenInSTEM

A sepia-toned historical portrait of Evelyn Boyd Granville (1924–2023), the second Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics in the U.S. She is positioned in the center, shown from the chest up in a three-quarter pose. Her expression is calm, intelligent, and determined, with a slight, confident smile. Her dark hair is styled in a voluminous, textured updo typical of the mid-20th century. She wears a light-colored, structured blouse with a classic pointed collar. The foreground portrait is superimposed over a blurred background of a dark chalkboard filled with complex mathematical formulas, symbols, and notations—including limits, Greek letters, and geometric equations. The composition places Granville as the literal face of the advanced science behind her, symbolizing her groundbreaking work for NASA’s Project Mercury and the Apollo program. The overall mood is academic, reverent, and inspiring, highlighting her historical significance as a "Hidden Figure" who helped pave the way for women of color in STEM.

Esperanza Spalding was the first jazz artist to win the Grammy for Best New Artist (2011), beating out Justin Bieber and Drake. The now 5-time Grammy-winning virtuoso bassist, singer, and composer is a leading figure in 21st-century #jazz. #JazzDay #music #musicsky

A charming color photograph of American jazz bassist, singer, and composer Esperanza Emily Spalding (born October 18, 1984), a five-time Grammy winner and the first jazz artist to be named Best New Artist (2011). Spalding is seated on a warm wooden floor, her head resting thoughtfully on her left hand as she leans against a polished cello. Her right hand holds a black pen, suggesting a moment of creative composition. She is surrounded by her musical world: a towering double bass stands behind her, and two violins (one standing up, one laying down) rest against the cello to her side. Spalding radiates a calm, intellectual air, her expression serene with a slight, knowing smile. Her signature large, round Afro frames her face, while her attire—a white tank top and navy-and-white pinstriped trousers—blends classic and modern styles. Multiple layers of colorful beaded and metallic necklaces add a bohemian touch. Set against a striking red and white wall, the composition captures her as a trailblazing figure in contemporary music, embodying a mood of artistic brilliance and deep connection to her craft.

Some Gang-gang Cockatoos visited yesterday! It's a small flock of mostly immature males who grouped together after they were weened last Summer. They're the local Gang-gang gang. #birds

Photograph of a Gang-gang Cockatoo on a bare branch looking at the viewer. It's a small cockatoo (Galah-sized), mostly dark grey but with lots of yellow, orange, and green streaks and spots on its breast and belly. Its head still only has the first traces of its mature red plumage, mostly on the crest.

Same species, different individual, close-up focusing on the face from the shoulders up. This one has a little more red on the head and crest, as well a patches of red starting to appear around its eyes and under its cheek.
