In Haifa today. The street's empty. No one smiling. Even in this city that has suffered so many attacks, the ceasefire means nothing. Our hostages not home. One storeowner said "even if the hostages were home, Netanyahu has torn apart our country and made it into something we no longer recognize."

Today is the 8th day of this terrible time. The only hope is for leaders with the imagination to let go of hate and open dialogue. The open, innocent dialogue of children as Israeli poet Ronni Somek describes in his poem "Dream Treaties" tr by Vivian Eden. May there be peace. Amen.

Today's poem is by the Palestinian poet Samih AI-Qassem, tr. Nazih Kassis It could have been written by a Palestinian or an Israeli. We are two sides of a single hair. It is the duality of this poem that strikes me now. The incomprehensible losses. Please may we know peace.
