Went to see BIIRD, the all-women Irish trad band, at an intimate wee venue in SF last night and it honestly felt close to a religious experience (which is exactly how I felt last time I saw them). Extra powerful after everything this week re: Irish artists standing ten toes down on their politics.

There’s No Place Like Group Chats
My old friends and I have ended up scattered across different states, in different time zones, but we’ve made our own neighborhood inside the black and blue bubbles of our phones.

“Cambridge–like many elite universities–has been mired in actual scandals of rape, nepotism, plagiarism and more. Remember them? You probably don’t, because they barely made the news” I am so sad. Absolutely horrendous decision to substantially uphold planning permission for homes to be built on the grounds of Bessborough Mother & Baby institution. We have not reckoned with this dreadful recent past and Bessborough has a key role in that reckoning. www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster...

Excuse the hell out of me, why are you telling this to the paper like it's gossip? What did you do to protect people when you realised he wad a danger? What kind of processes exist in the party when things like this come to light? Why aren't you presently re-evaluating your entire life?

Sometimes I genuinely feel like I am a woman with a fork in a world where it rains soup, and never more so when, the week its former leader is convicted of multiple sexual offences against children, I see multiple members of that party on the front of every paper saying "we knew he was a creep!!"

Last night there was a moment when a call went out by activists for spare beds for around 30 people and within less than an hour it was confirmed they were all sorted. Unbelievable work.

This should be the news coming out of Belfast today. The Finucane family have fought for years to get to this point & the inquiry opens with a UK Govt apology that will get lost in today's news. Pay attention to this - the past hasn't passed here, as days of unrest show: www.rte.ie/news/ireland...

'Monumental day' as Finucane murder public inquiry begins
The widow of murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane has hailed the first day of a long-campaigned for public inquiry into his death as "monumental".

I have to say, listening to the Today programme dedicate an entire (context free) section about whether migrants are more likely to be convicted criminals *the morning after* hundreds of non-migrants of my own ethnicity committed a pogrom is blood boiling.

How many women in Northern Ireland have been stabbed to death in the last few years without loyalists needing to riot over it?

I have a Cryptpad spreadsheet I am sharing with currently identified "gathering spots" being announced tonight. This was assembled using publicly available information and I'll keep updating it with anything further identified. I recommend you steer clear of them. cryptpad.fr/sheet/#/2/sh...

Many women have been horrifically killed here in the past 5 years, including at least 7 who were stabbed multiple times, and their deaths did not receive statements from the PM, debates in the commons, or global news coverage. Nor were there any riots, or condemnations of cultures by politicians.

A picture of violence: The 30 women killed in more than four years
In at least 21 of the 30 deaths, the killers - or the suspects in their killings - were well-known to the women.

Very honoured to have been awarded the John & Pat Hume Foundation Fellowship for my ongoing PhD research on working-class girlhood, care, and violence in West Belfast. The fellowship supports research reflecting Hume's commitment to peacebuilding & reconciliation across Ireland.

English-only California: the golden state with Spanish place names removed. First map I ever commissioned, to commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, whereby the US made Mexico give up its northern half, adding California and the Southwest to the Union.

As we await a verdict in the trial of Soldier F, another reminder that in 2010 the Bloody Sunday inquiry found - the killings were unjustified - none of the 14 dead (7 of whom were children) had guns - no warnings were given - no soldiers were under threat - the troops were the first to open fire

As Barney's body lay out in the street in a pool of blood, the Derry Civil Rights Association banner held by marchers that day was used to cover him. Damien O'Kane's father (@mckanedj on Twitter) kept it and donated to the Museum of Free Derry, where it is now on permanent display.
