The "speech and debate" clause of the Constitution makes it quite difficult to consider official actions (like adjourning the House) a violation of the oath. By the plain wording of the clause a member of congress could call for the dissolution of the nation in a floor speech and it'd be legal.

Apparently, that 10-day limit only applies if Congress is in session. Since July 4th is next week, Congress will be adjourned when the deadline hits.

Some data centers have built natural gas turbines to power themselves. Requiring them to power themselves might not work well.

The Constitution gives each State a set number of seats in the House. Federal law prohibits states from electing them all at large (or even in multi-member districts) instead of single-member districts. Altering the first is **very** difficult and changing the second isn't happening under the GOP.

Neither party existed when the country was founded. Andrew Jackson was the first Democratic president and Lincoln was the first Republican one. Of course, the parties switched focuses in the mid-20th century. The modern versions of the parties are less than a century old.

Is there any existing literature on the same for liquor? For example, there's a flavored vodka called Loopy that tastes like Froot Loops. My younger brother introduced me to it when he was 21. (About 15 years ago now.)

It won't happen that quickly but whites are already not the majority among <18's in the US. That won't likely be the case for the population at large until the mid-2040s. They'll still be a plurality (the largest group) but not the over 50% that they are now.

Technically when you get ID here you have to specifically reject voter registration. It's been that way since 1995. However, many American citizens don't have ID so they aren't registered that way.

As a Puerto Rican your territories current position is indeed toxic. Either you need to become a state with the full rights and responsibilities thereof or become an independent nation. This middle ground hurts everyone both there and here on the mainland.

In that case, the replacements should have been part of the naval buildup in the region before starting the conflict. The US and Isreal started this conflict, they could have made sure that everything was in place prior to kicking it off.

Assuming that Trump was telling the truth (I know, this isn't a good idea) and he actually did win every county in Oklahoma all three times he was on the ballot, this isn't likely.

Until then, we have a partial government shutdown, including DHS but they've been named as "essential" so, not only are they still working but, they're still being paid.

To answer your question, so far, no one but HHS has funding. The Senate passed a package that would fund everything except for DHS (and ICE) for the rest of the fiscal year and DHS for two weeks so that there can be debate on how to reign them in. That package is back in the House awaiting a vote.

In some areas there may be by-elections but the only thing on my ballot, which I've already mailed in, is a local milage to fund the school district. Either you need to check the calendar (federal general elections are in even years) or target your message better.

Since most facial recognition technology was initially tested on its developers, who _tended_ to be white males, it historically failed on women and people of color. It's better now but not to the point where you should trust it above all other evidence.

One wouldn't even have to go full on "pack the court" mode. Just have Congress pass a law stating that the number of SCOTUS justices shall be equal to the number of circuit courts with one added if the number of circuits is even. That would push us up to 13 right now.

While hard to enforce, general strikes are illegal in the US. You can only strike as a negotiating tactic with your own employer. Realistically, they'd probably arrest the leaders of any such action and wait out the rest of us. Most Americans are only a couple missed paychecks away from destitution.

General strikes are illegal in the US. Though I have no idea how it would be enforced. Also, with the number of Americans within one paycheck of homelessness, I don't know how you'd do it. I'm not there but, looking at my fridge, I couldn't go without shopping for more than a day or so.

I'm no Newsom fan but California did sue the federal government concerning the guard deployment in LA and won at the appellate level (after already winning in the district court) just before Labor Day. The legal process is slow but steady (as long as SCOTUS doesn't screw it up).

Based on a simple search, 44 states give their executive some kind of partial veto power. I guess it's not as uncommon as I thought. I still remember when a federal line item veto was created and ruled unconstitutional. I'm surprised that the state ones have withstood scrutiny.

Guess which part of the government is in charge of arresting and imprisoning people charged with criminal contempt. The DoJ. No judge wants to give an order they know will be disobeyed. The goal here seems to be giving the government enough rope to hang themselves.

Too many people decided not to vote. Look at the vote totals from 2020 (154.6 million) compared to 2024 (152.3 million). The difference between the two seems small but you must remember that there were more eligible voters in 2024 than in 2020 too.

I don't even get why there was a rules argument against expanding the courts. There's nothing unconstitutional about adding more justices. You just need the President to nominate them and the Senate to confirm them. For Supreme Court justices, you even only need a simple majority in the Senate.

In xkcd, the alt text is another part of the joke rather than a simple retelling of the content of the picture. For example, the alt text of this comic is, "It was great until my thumb slipped and I accidentally launched my telescope into the air at Mach 8."
