This is honestly a potential mistake by the fascists. Leaving an anodyne non-threat like no kings as the opposition gives them latitude. Coming down on them has at least the vague possibility of galvanizing a reaction at a time when opposition is in a coma.

The funny part is #nokings has been an anodyne failure, it's little more than a few parades, and they're still being shitty about it.

Don't spend much time on Instagram but just tried this little test there. Search wouldn't search. Something did go wrong and its name is Zuckerberg.

someone should show trump the movie The Core, about a space ship that goes to the center of the earth to light off a nuke to restart the magma spin (???), and tell him it's the news and that it's actually happening, just to see what he'd say on tv

you can pay for support, usually from whoever set you up. and it's not that expensive. and it's not like the rest of the faang shit is free.

Nextcloud just works now, and medium and small non-techie orgs can just use it without much supervision. But it doesn't have much of a marketing budget.

oh that's much more specific than i was talking about. i just want to replace the FAANG software and get people/orgs on hardware and software they run or pay someone close to them to run while they retain control of their data. you know, the bog standard digital sovereignty everyone talks about

Network effects are real, man! ...I want people to be thoughtful, but also would like it very much if people calmed the fuck down on the engagement other people need to do to get through their lives. People get way too blame the user about the shit internet we're all trying to navigate.

Yeah I pretty much jettisoned Insta, we all pick our battles. My battle for the next few years is probably just getting people off FAANG for infrastructure. And pushing own hosted solutions that can be sovereign and out of reach of the Americans altogether... Pray for me & my inevitable perdition.

Most of Europe is harder, I mean we're talking about an EU that still functions over Telegram. And basically all of Africa is impossible. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, that's it. After all, as you know Facebook == Internet for a good while on the Continent.

Also I should point out *yet again* that the addition of AI to whatsapp means there's a Meta listener in every whatsapp chat. I'm sure they'd never abuse that, or preserve chats for law enforcement. Never ever ever. Anyway signal is good and by god Delta chat should be the Telegram killer.

I mean there is so much on Twitter that you can't get around. it's like telling people to give up whatsapp because Meta is evil and has captured them. No one is going to be giving up whatapp. I've been a day one on Signal and I can't give up whatsapp.

International ngo stuff is often on Twitter, because in a lot of countries it's an improvement on facebook. As are a bunch of professional communities that work on genetic diseases, long COVID, stuff like that. They often don't really even live in musk's world. French admin communication, Twitter.

There's communities that I value who never left, so I didn't either. Network effects are real and hard to fight, man. I have no idea why people who left would want to go back. Maybe for terrible maps and the satire accounts? But it is what it is. It's not like I haven't been abused on all of them.

This is a bit confusing because presumably I'm in my own filter bubble, that's all I hear about Musk, when the real, deep problem is that starlink tearing holes in the ozone layer could lead to a really horrible hurts-all-the-way-down mass extinction from UVB tearing apart everything on the surface

It would be pretty weird for the UK to join Schengen and Ireland not to. Ireland's only reason to stay out is accommodating the UK. It wouldn't have any particular effect on NI other than less paperwork.

I wish there was more online scholarship about James Baldwin’s novels. He finished If Beale Street Could Talk on Columbus Day 1973, and there’s a striking passage that I CANNOT find where the narrator’s mother talks about Columbus, and how he deserved to be imprisoned for discovering America
