“Could queering offer another form of judgment, one more colourful, poetic, musical, and playful than that offered by law and legal format – judgment as discernment rather than decision?” Sean Mulcahy reviews Queer Judgments in Alternative Law Journal. Read: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

The Queer Judge is taking a new shape and going places. It was written in the stars that the Queer Judge had to visit the UK Surpreme Court sooner or later. We got up to listening to poetry and doing some dancing. Watch this space - the Queer Judgments Project is letting its creative juices flow!

The Queer Judgments Project is about queer friendship & creativity. Recently, one of our contributors, Dr Joy Twemlow, crocheted this queer flower bouquet which she gifted to one of the editors, Dr Sen Raj. This bouquet represents the beauty, innovation, kinship & flourishing of queer communities. 💐

Queer Judgments

Location:	East Tower, Grand Suite 2B
Date:	Thursday, May 22 12:45 pm
Duration:	1 hour 45 minutes
Session Type: Roundtable Session

The Queer Judgments Project is an initiative that evolved from disparate scholarly conversations about how legal judgments related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics could have been written in more appropriate terms in light of the legal framework at the time. Started in 2021, the Queer Judgments Project brought together scholars, activists, lawyers, and judges to reimagine, recreate, and rewrite judgments from queer and complementary critical perspectives. This roundtable will serve to launch the new Queer Judgments edited collection (Counterpress, 2024) with talks from some of the contributors. The roundtable will also be an opportunity to discuss future scholarly and creative directions for the project. We encourage anyone with an interest in queer legal work and critical judgments to attend.Speakers

Today we joined some outstanding current and former law students at UNSW who engaged with writing queer judgments as part of their coursework. It was a particular queer delight to hear the care, joy, fun, and hopefulness that underpinned their written work at law school. Here’s to more of this! 🌈🎓

Book Details
Queer Judgments (co-edited by Professor Nuno Ferreira, Dr Maria Federica Moscati & Dr Senthorun Raj) brings together scholars, lawyers, and activists from around the world who are interested in re-imagining and re-writing legal judgments by using queer and related critical perspectives. This edited collection has an international reach and multi-disciplinary scope, and takes the reader through 26 judgments and commentaries on various legal fields: from crime and sodomy cases to privacy and discrimination cases, from family and parenthood cases to health and reproduction cases, and ending with asylum and migration cases. Queer Judgments is intended to be a teaching, research, and advocacy resource for anyone interested in critical perspectives on jurisprudence, queerness, and social justice.
