“If they attack and pressure those who feel little to no sexual attraction or interest in sex, that is a gateway to attacking anyone who does have sex in any way that’s not ‘approved’ or ‘acceptable.’” Niger’s criminalising of asexuality is about enforcing patriarchal ideas of gender and sexuality.

Why Niger explicitly criminalising asexuality is significant to everyone, regardless of identity
To understand Nigers asexuality criminalisation, we should see this law as part of a bigger – and growing – global trend among conservatives about 'traditional families'

I’m in Taipei this week to present a talk on critical-creative queer legal work as part of @queerjudgments.bsky.social at the National Taiwan University (8th September). Come along if you’re around. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🇹🇼
【Event】Critique and Creativity in Legal Work: Pursuing Queer Judgments for Community Wellbeing and Human Rights

Can legal judgments only be written in accordance with existing legal language and rules? If we rethink a case from the perspectives of KU, trans people, and other marginalized communities, what might legal judgments not become? And how can a judgment truly respond to the community's safety, freedom, well-being, and justice while maintaining legal understandability?
This lecture invites Professor Senthorun (Sen) Raj from the Queer Judgments Project to discuss the methodology and political significance of "#酷兒化法律判決" (Queerized Legal Judgments) - Queerized legal writing is not just rewriting court judgments, but also a practice that combines critique and creation: scholars, activists, creators, lawyers, and judges reimagine and write about legal cases involving gender/sexuality, minorities, and other marginalized groups. It challenges the long-standing legal assumptions about "normal", family, gender, body, and rights, and questions: if the law truly puts the life of the community at the center, how can judgments be different?

The lecture will further discuss how #批判性的法律實踐 (critical legal practices) can help us reimagine litigation, judgments, reform, resistance, and the relationship between law and communities.

All are welcome to join the discussion, including those interested in #健康人權 (health and human rights), #性別正義 (gender justice), policy research, community participation, and critical research methods.

Lecturer | Professor Senthorun (Sen) Raj
● Professor of Legal Humanities and Human Rights, Manchester Law School, Manchester Metropolitan University
● Former Chair of Amnesty International UK
● Co-editor of Queer Judgments (2025)

Time | September 8, 2026 (Tue) 14:00–16:00
Location | National Taiwan University School of Public Health R604
Participation | No registration required, those interested can attend directly on the day.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

For years, originalists have lectured us that they no longer look to "the Framers' intent," but to the "original public meaning" of the Constitution. Here, Kavanaugh throws all that out the window to lash the citizenship clause in his subjective guess as to what its Framers intended it to do.
First, significant illegal immigration into the United
States is a new circumstance that was largely unknown as
of 1868 and that the Framers of the Fourteenth
Amendment could not have fully anticipated. And the
Framers likely would not have anticipated (and presumably
would not have intended) the odd result of granting a
substantial birthright citizenship benefit to (i) those foreign
citizens who violate U. S. immigration law and illegally
enter or overstay and then have children in the United
States over (ii) those foreign citizens who follow U. S.
immigration law and have children in their home countries
while seeking to lawfully immigrate to the United States.
Nor presumably would they have wanted to grant
constitutional birthright citizenship to children of foreign
citizens unlawfully in the country while simultaneously
denying constitutional birthright citizenship to children of
tribal American Indians. So too, the issue of temporary
visitors who give birth in the United States presents a new
and different circumstance than in 1868 given the
significant changes in immigration laws and travel.
