“Queer Wales” with Emily Garside
From popstars to rugby players, this episode has all the Welsh queer icons you could want. Emily Garside teaches me about H from Steps, Russel T. Davies, the Ladies of Llangollen and so many other fascinating LGBTQIA+ people from Wales. We talk about whether wondering if you’re queer enough is similar to wondering if you’re Welsh enough and how the prejudice against ‘sounding gay’ relates to sounding Welsh.   Books by Emily Garside: Rainbow Wales: Queer Icons Past and Present (Calon, May 2026) Out of the Box: Queer TV through the Decades (Manchester University Press, January 2027) Gay Aliens and Queer Folks: How Russell T Davies Changed TV (Calon, 2023) Seasons of Love: Why Rent Matters (Applause) You Are My Happy Ending: Schitt’s Creek and the Legacy of Queer TV (Applause) Angels in America at the British National Theatre (McFarland) Love that Journey for me: The Queer Revolution of Schitt’s Creek (404 Ink)   Other References: Russel T Davies Ladies of Llangollen Edward II. Piers Gaveston Steps Ian ‘H’ Watkins Elliot Page Luke Evans Eisteddfod Cymru Marquess of Anglesey Viscount Tredegar Norena Shopland Jan Morris’ Conundrum Ivor Novello Colin Jackson Connie Orff Alun Saunders Natha Wyburn Queer As Folk It’s A Sin Lisa Power Section 28 @emigarside (IG) https://thenerdynotebook.substack.com/ https://emilygarside.com/ Surrey Rainbow Choir  https://www.rainbowchoir.co.uk/     Questions you should be able to respond to after listening: -      Is there such a thing as a cohesive Welsh queer identity? What are Emily’s thoughts on this and what is her approach? -      Emily speaks about parallels between attitudes towards Welsh and queer identities. Which one does she discuss? Is there a facet of your identity that feels similar yet different from your queerness? -      What is an eisteddfod? Please look it up if you’re not familiar because we forgot to explain the term in the episode. -      Have you ever askes yourself whether you are queer or trans enough? How do we speak about this question in this episode? -      Who was your favourite person to learn about in the episode?

Dear Mr Green,
RE: Pausing of gender-affirming surgeries by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning
Committee
We are writing to express our profound disappointment at the abrupt pausing of planned operations within the Welsh Gender Service. The sudden nature of this decision by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee has left patients, many of whom have been preparing for surgery for months or years, without the care they were expecting and relying upon.
The impact on individuals and the wider trans community in Wales has been significant.
Understandably, this development has caused distress, fear, and a deep sense of uncertainty.
This comes at a time when the rights and dignity of trans people across the UK are increasingly under pressure. You will know that gender-affirming healthcare in Wales is clinician-led, patient-focused, and carefully paced; it is not rushed, nor undertaken lightly.
In light of this, we would like to raise the following urgent questions on behalf of our constituents and the wider community:
• Why has surgery been halted for a form of treatment that has among the highest levels of psychiatric screening and one of the lowest regret rates of any procedure offered by the NHS?
• What specifically is the cause for concern?
• What evidence informed this decision?
• Why were patient stakeholders not consulted before the decision was taken?
• Was any risk assessment carried out regarding the impact of cancelling treatment at such short notice? If not, why?
• What role, if any, did NHS England play in influencing or directing this decision?
• What is the scope of any review now underway, and when can we expect its conclusions?Senedd Cymru
Welsh Parliament
Plaid Cymru
• When can patients expect surgeries to recommence?
• What safeguards are in place to protect patients' mental health during this pause?
• What commitment can be given to the continuation of therapies and hormone treatment during this period?
Patients deserve clarity, reassurance and a clear pathway forward. We would be grateful for a detailed response addressing each of the above points, together with confirmation of how the Welsh Gender Service intends to support those affected during this period of uncertainty.
This letter is also being copied to Suzanne Rankin and Kirsty Williams, Chief Executive and Chair of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, given the board's role in administering the Welsh Gender Service.
We look forward to your reply.

Our response to NHS Wales suspending all gender-affirming surgeries. This cruelty will kill people. We will resist. ( 1 / 4 )
The NHS Wales Commissioning Committee has forced the Welsh Gender Service to suspend all gender-affirming surgeries.

This nakedly cruel policy shift will wreak havoc on the lives of Welsh trans people. it will force patients into months of limbo that massively disrupt their lives, while NHS higher-ups take their sweet time to cook up yet another sham "investigation".

at worst, patients will be driven into worse mental health and suicidality. despite government cover-ups, we all know the true statistics about our community. The Welsh gender care system, while not perfect, is one of the best in the uk, and delivered for trans people by collaborating with the community and with GP surgeries, proving that positive change is possible.

This massive u-turn comes under pressure from the Welsh Tories, whipped into a frenzy by a terf blogger and Murdoch rag ‘The Times’, which claimed that wales having higher surgery referral rates than England somehow proves that harm is done.

that’s all it took to obliterate healthcare for hundreds of trans people.

one blog from a terf, and a single article from the times.

Transphobic attacks on the Welsh Gender Service, supported by supposedly reputable media outlets like Nation Cymru, have now bourne fruit: Our sources in the trans community tell us that the Cardiff GIC has begun cancelling scheduled surgeries for trans patients.
Over the past few weeks an attack has been launched on the Welsh Gender Service, spearheaded by right wing politicians but supported by supposedly reputable media outlets like Nation Cymru.

Now our sources in the trans community tell us that the Cardiff GIC has begun cancelling scheduled surgeries for trans patients.

As far as we know no news outlet has picked up this story yet so we feel a duty to inform our followers. We welcome the organic response already forming in the trans community, but its clear that the current methods of marches, lobbying and so on are no longer sufficient.

Trans people and our cis allies need to organise to directly take on the transphobic apparatus denying us healthcare, and keep working to build strong DIY networks in the meantime.

If there's a trans person in your community struggling today, lend them your strength. Remember, the only antidote to despair is action.

We are aware of reports that the Welsh Gender Service has cancelled scheduled patient surgeries in response to a service review currently taking place. We have been in touch to confirm further details. Politics should not come before patient welfare and we are deeply disappointed by the WGS.
