Today’s poem is called ‘A Traditional Family Christmas’.
A Traditional Family Christmas

It wasn’t until that first Christmas with your family
that I realised how we all do it differently,
how every family forges its own traditions, as bright
and distinct as any giant, shining star.

The way you laid out coal sacks instead of stockings;
the recital of a limerick before the opening of each present,
Christopher Lee’s heavy metal Christmas album
playing quietly in the background; the pre-breakfast snorkel;

the Dance of the Seven Baubles; the festive epaulettes;
lunch with its ptarmigan fritters in milk sauce,
the suet potatoes, and the sweet and sour popcorn;
the replenishing of glasses with red turkey wine;

sprout-rolling in the park; the posting of a tinsel stick
through Mr Jennings’ letterbox; and back for an evening of TV
(some classic episodes of Panorama) and games
(Hoist the Pickle, No Elbows Please!, Speculum) then bed.

The following year you came to my family for Christmas.
You said later that it was weird.

Today’s poem is called ‘This is One of Those Poems without any Rhymes’.
This is One of Those Poems without any Rhymes

This is one of those poems
without any rhymes,
the sort of thing you might read
in the Telegraph or Time[crossed out] Guardian.

For, as proper poets know,
rhyme’s deleterious
and only gets in the way
when you’re trying to be serious[crossed out] profound.

It’s childish and cloying,
simplistic and singsong
to bat rhymes back and forth
like some dull game of ping pong[crossed out] table tennis.

To the literary critic
it will cause great affront,
which will make you resent them
and think them a snob.

This is also one of those poems
which looks like it might go on to say something insightful
about the human condition
but then just kind of ends.

Today’s poem is called ‘How to Avoid Mixing Your Metaphors’.
How to Avoid Mixing Your Metaphors

It’s not rocket surgery.
First, get all your ducks on the same page.
After all, you can’t make an omelette
without breaking stride.

Be sure to watch what you write
with a fine-tuned comb.
Check and re-check until the cows turn blue.
It’s as easy as falling off a piece of cake.

Don’t worry about opening up
a whole hill of beans:
you can always burn that bridge when you come to it,
if you follow where I’m coming from.

Concentrate! Keep your door closed
and your enemies closer.
Finally, don’t take the moral high horse:
if the metaphor fits, walk a mile in it.

Today’s poem is called “On ‘;..p’[[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’”.
On ‘;..p’[[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’

Upon returning to my desk,
having left it temporarily in search of biscuits,
I discovered my cat had written a poem
on my laptop.

It was called ‘;..p’[[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’
and constituted one of her more difficult pieces,
but it was the kind of poem
which rewarded repeat reading.

I was struck by its experimental structure,
the absence of line breaks;
indeed, not one single space between any
of the poem’s 10,000 or so characters.

One of the work’s central motifs –
‘jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk’ –
was, by turns, reassuring and unsettling,
while the symbolism of ‘###################’,

hinted at our 21st century preoccupation with social media.
And who could not be moved by that devastating final line,
its message of hope piercing our hearts like an arrow:
‘`````````5555=======================’.

Today’s poem is called ‘This is Not the Poem I Had Hoped to Write’.
This is Not the Poem I Had Hoped to Write

This is not the poem I had hoped to write
when I sat at my desk and the page was white.
You see, there were other words I’d had in mind,
yet this is what I leave behind.

I thought it was a poem to eradicate war;
one of such power, it would heal all the sores
of a world torn apart by conflict and schism.
But it isn’t.

Lovers, I’d imagined, would quote from it daily,
Mothers would sing it to soothe crying babies.
And whole generations would be given new hope.
Nope.

I had grand aspirations. Believe me, I tried.
Humanity examined with lessons applied.
But the right words escaped me; so often they do.
Have these in lieu.

Today’s poem is called ‘First Date’.
First Date

We’d so much in common, that was clear from the start:
a marriage of souls, like de Beauvoir and Sartre.
The connection was instant, almost irrational:
simply simpatico, fully compatible.

You confessed you loved winter, north Yorkshire, and cats.
‘Me, too!’ I responded. ‘How amazing is that?’
You were wild about Wharton: you loved Ethan Frome.
‘His best,’ I said, thinking I’d read him when home.

You praised a revival of Pinter’s Dumb Waiter.
I nodded along. I should google that later.
The discussion then turned to things that you hated:
Pulp Fiction, you thought, was quite over-rated.

‘You make some good points,’ I eventually said.
I could always hide that poster under my bed.
You spoke of a loathing of poetry that rhymed
and I said yes,
that stuff’s awful.

Today’s poem is called ‘She’d Dance’.
She’d Dance

She’d dance like no one was watching
although she liked to think he was.
The kitchen was her grand ballroom;
her partner was a mop.

She’d foxtrot among the pots and pans,
she’d paso doble to the sink,
and as she swept across the floor,
her mind danced, too. She’d think

of how he’d held her in his arms
at the Locarno and the Ritz -
whirling, waltzing, a world apart -
in the years before the kids,

and longer still before the shadow
the doctor spotted on his lungs.
How dazzlingly they had danced!
How dizzyingly she had spun!

Her neighbours saw her sometimes,
shuffling bent-backed to the shops.
But at home, she’d dance like no one was watching
although she liked to think he was.
