After four months, the journal has not found a single reviewer for my PhD student's manuscript. The academic peer review system is broken. I think we all should: 1. Review three papers for every one that we submit. 2. Promptly declined to review a paper when the request arrives. #AcademicChatter
A table with columns "Stage" and "Start Date" tracks the multi-month editorial progress of a manuscript submission from October 2025 to January 2026. The log begins on October 8, 2025, with "Preliminary Manuscript Data Submitted," and moves through several administrative phases including "Initial Quality Control" and the assignment of Editors and Associate Editors by late October. Starting on October 26, 2025, the status begins an oscillating cycle between "Contacting Potential Reviewers" and "Waiting for Reviewer Assignment," appearing multiple times through November and into early 2026. The most recent entries show "Contacting Potential Reviewers" on January 12, 2026, followed by a shift back to "Waiting for Reviewer Assignment" on January 13, 2026, indicating an ongoing search for peer reviewers. This has continued until the last update on January 26, 2026

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Let’s not mince words on exactly what the MAGA movement is.
A sign at a protest reads “you lost” next to a Confederate flag, “you lost” next to a Nazi flag, and “you’re next” next to a MAGA hat.

Brutal account of what it’s like to teach at the University of Florida right now in the NYT—extraordinary climate of fear. People afraid to say intersectional and talk about lynchings. Fake students trying to entrap Muslim faculty or just making things up altogether. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/07/o...
In the three years since Ron DeSantis set out to rid Florida’s universities of woke ideology, my campus changed significantly. Professors suddenly worried about what they could say and teach. Some started avoiding terms like “racism.” One student recently told me that when someone used “intersectional” in class, the instructor told her not to use that word.

One colleague told me that he stopped assigning an article about lynching and white evangelicalism for fear that those terms could raise red flags. Another said she was censoring her language not just in class and on campus but also on personal social media.

Several professors have been subjected to efforts at entrapment. Last year a man posing as a student tried to encourage Muslim faculty members to criticize Mr. DeSantis and Israel. A similar incident happened to me. In October 2024 my department chair called me into his office to tell me that someone claiming to be a student in my Religion and Science class had complained that I spent 20 minutes talking about specific candidates, including who I was voting for and why. I was stunned. That never happened in that class or any other; it is antithetical to the way I teach. Fortunately

Look. This is not an accurate description of autism. But some people with disabilities are nonverbal, or can't play baseball or to need help in the bathroom. Some people need round the clock care. Their lives are valuable and meaningful and we're a better society when we recognize that.
