Also, Arc of the Scythe series by Schusterman. Annette Marie writes pretty fun it's-not-that-deep urban fantasy series. (There are usually romances, fwiw.) I've heard Green City Wars by Tchaikovsky is good, but haven't read it yet. It's like urban sci fi, from what I understand.

Vorkosigan Saga by McMaster Bujold, not "near" science fiction, but the adventures are wild and you follow the protag as he grows from young and impulsive to older and impulsive. I would personally start with Cordelia's Honor, but a younger reader might like starting with Young Miles more. 🤷🏻‍♀️
