This does not sound normal… is it rabid?!

A little personal note: It can be sad and hard to be a steward of water, weather, and climate sciences at times. We are in a climate crisis. It should be referred to as such. I will continue to do as much as I can to study, share/educate, and protect.

So Fort Collins had its latest 90°+ yesterday by more than a week (old record: 9/28/2011), after its earliest 90°+ by more than a month back in March (3/21, old record 5/5/2000). #COwx

Just noticed that this week’s Drought Monitor moved portions of the northern Denver metro area into the D4 Exceptional Drought category. It’s exactly where I would’ve expected it - and I’m smack dab in its center. Sigh.

Following a record low snow season and an all-time record warm summer, the Arapaho Glacier in western Boulder County is looking rough, even compared to just a decade ago 🧊📉 #COWx #colorado #glacier #Boulder #Denver

Me: At least it is raining somewhere in the west. Me: At least it's cooler. Me: At least the humidity makes my skin happy.

I think that's what happened; I just read too quickly and had a huge level of wishful thinking when I saw the plot since that is not what I had seen in terms of rainfall. Glad the water is in the air, but really wish it would come down from it's high pedestal lol.

Or, is this a plot of total QPF Sep 1-17?

Christina Kumler @purpal9.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I don't understand this run. Both DESI and pivotal weather display tools do not show that much total QPF for that run. I am missing something. Were you plotting at something different? Wet through Sat/Sun, yes, but not those totals.

I believe that smoke and smoke smell are not the same, chemically. They can break apart and travel separately. Sometimes, this leads to smelling smoke at surface but having fairly clear AQI at surface, and even aloft. It's happened a few times over the year. Interesting, huh?

I’m begging the cities to consider this in future projects, because right now it really feels like they haven’t. Or they don’t care. Between the school schedules, office goers, light schedules, and construction, it’s time taxing on most of us who already don’t have wiggle room in time.

How am I supposed to have pets/a baby and be in office 8 hours? We have one car. But, even if we had two, the extra time due to these projects is 👎👎👎 We are bound to school and work hours as are so many folks out there, and it sends us out all at once.

Bussing: already takes an hour one way because there’s no express; I have to detour into Louisville. And, subjected to the same delays as driving.

Biking: you closed Baseline as a through-way, which is one of our safest routes from Lafayette and Erie, with no good bike alt. Arapaho is not safe. Detouring north and south 2x time. The shoulders are a mess! My ebike with beefy tires has had THREE flats this year in Boulder. Due to nails. 💸⏰😓

Boulder county would appear to not have cared or coordinated road infrastructure projects this summer. Most employees can’t/don’t live in Boulder. A lot of us drive, bus, and bike east-west. The car traffic since school started has cost an extra 20mins one way in to get to my office.

I guess one more update: you just have to yell into the Internet void and it will finally pay off. While our first wave from the west split in typical fashion, this track angle was much more favorable for Rain at My House. 🙏👏⛈️

Unbelievable. Yet another gap in the precip at my house. if the drought monitor had my 1 mile cube resolution, we’d be extreme. I hate this. It has happened the like 14/15 times it rained in the area this summer.

The footage of this flash flood, circulating on social media, is possibly the most horrifying I've seen of any climate impact. Great to see NPR highlighting the cause without any hedging.

I remember discussions after the Marshall fire on how to safely get public's attention without cell/internet, and how tornado sirens would be confusing and send the opposite message. Ex: could lead to deaths if sheltering in place instead of fleeing.

PSA: There is no such thing as a "Super El Niño". There's weak, moderate, strong, and very strong. We are almost certainly headed into a very strong El Niño by this Fall, but it's just getting started. (tidbit: the phase of ENSO is not determined using daily or weekly values)

I'm not one to beg, but the last three weeks I have watched rain split and fizzle at my house. We've seen maybe a 0.1"? Not an exaggeration, I have the receipts. The worst was two weeks ago it was pouring just 0.5 mile away... at least it's raining in the state somewhere.

Open and informal question to the Bluesky #weather and #meteorology community: if you regularly use the RAP, HRRR, or now RRFS to inform decisions, would you mind sharing how? I’m interested in learning about your use cases: what are they and who or what do they support? (1/3)
