I’m not suggesting that Zack Polanski is a British Mamdani, but the way Nick Robinson spoke to him on Friday’s Today programme demonstrates this mechanism at work.

The BBC is great. When it goes, which l think it will, it will be another Brexit moment for this country. Something we’ll bitterly regret.

It either hasn’t secured distribution yet or, if it has, they’re keeping very quiet about it.

I didn’t know that about Archer’s father until today, but it’s interesting that both he and David Cornwell (John Le Carré), whose father was also a notorious con man, went on to be successful authors with a flexible approach to marital fidelity.

Wikipedia: “Early in his career, Archer gave conflicting accounts to the press of his father's supposed, but non-existent, military career. William was, in fact, a bigamist, fraudster and conman who impersonated another William Archer, a deceased war medal holder.” It goes on, and gets worse.

I had him on the phone once; he was trying to get my then boss along to one of his champagne and shepherd’s pie parties. Even in doing that he managed to come off like a condescending prick.

“Badenoch says Archer was “a great communicator” and a “great storyteller”, and someone who believed in Conservatism.” He also spent two years, 2001-03, in prison for perjury.

I get accidentally invited to that sort of thing from time to time (I don’t go). I suspect they’re like the one-day AI sales conferences in Westminster, but with better/more canapés. There’s no sense in which a politician would emerge with greater insight than “Buy this particular product”.

If he’s saying that tech companies have done a poor job of ensuring that politicians have the slightest clue of what their “product” is, how it works and what it can do, there’s an argument to be made; that’s very different from the revolving door. Tho it’s not clear that’s what he *is* saying…

No, it’s not ‘normal’ for humans to be in competition all the time. It’s not normal to work for most of your waking hours of the day. It’s not normal to be stressed 24/7. Stop taking a few hundred years of capitalism and pretending that’s just how being human is. It’s not.
