That said, consistent, tough, but respectful policing is generally welcomed, even by people in minority neighborhoods that have born the brunt of police violence over the years. This is why they tend to react negatively to “defund the police.”

Of course, what happened in the 1970s was based on an outdated theory that being “tough“ on perceived criminals was the only way to keep criminality down in a city. That viewpoint has been revived by Republicans of late, but there is no evidence that that is beneficial.

The solution is not to defend them. The solution is to actually hire more and train them better. There should also be accountability for acting out, but identifying police officers who are burned out and cynical is a good move early on, instead of dealing with the consequences later.
