The BC NDP marked the 25th anniversary of 2001's devastating cuts to the transit networks by proposing a new round of transit funding cuts, observes Michael Hall.

The intention is good but can we stop obsessing with free transit and worry about fixing the existing issues first? A single ride costing $3 less isn't going to help someone get to a night shift job if their bus still doesn't exist after 9pm -- they will still have no choice but to pay for a car.

this is just my inherent pessimism since I feel like we keep going through these cycles of "the PCPO is finished!" "ah well nevertheless" every year since 2018, though I know very little about Queens Park politics

was just a little confused because this article seems to be talking about something set up by the prov gov in 2023?

Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 2h
the article says that the PQ wants harsher restrictions on trans people, what are some specifics?

Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 2h
was this from the PQ or CAQ?

My impression is that for a lot of QC lefties separatism presents an infinite canvas where all their dreams can come true without any constraints from Ottawa, because you can always worry about the constraints you'd face in a hypothetical later

I wonder what would happen if they dropped the sovereigntism, are there enough diehard lefty separatists that it would offset their gains amongst left wing federalists? Maybe just not a big enough constituency.

the funniest bit about the Quebec election today are Canadian and American anglos vaguely remembering the PQ were social democrats in the 90s and assuming they're the same party now

I hate the culture war shit too but the idea of a province full of ungrateful hicks is complete nonsense. I grew up in MTL, I love it dearly.

man, what do you want them to do? it sure would be nice if they weren't held in obvious contempt by Anglos now wouldn't it Separatism still polls at like 30%. QC's bilingualism rate and life expectancies are the highest in the nation. Median income is only slightly below national average.

lot of English Canada (and Americans insofar as they care) still seem to view them as weirdo provincial hicks who won’t get with the program, be team players and speak a real language, not as overtly as in 1841 maybe but still there, thus feeding the defensive crouch of QC nats and so on forever
080
Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 21h
the preoccupations of QC nats increasingly rhyming with those of ethnonationalists worldwide has complicated this but I still find it telling what gets Anglos hopping mad is them deliberarely defining themselves in opposition to us, because the idea of us being the suspect outsiders is so foreign

Sometimes I wonder what life is like in the world where we upgraded these like in Europe or Japan esp on the more regional ones but alas that’s not the world we live in At least I think what we have in the urban core today is frankly better

it's both sad to see that they never got upgraded but also it's very easy to understand why these died

Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders @movementyvr.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This morning, both the BC Conservatives and the BC NDP ruled out a vehicle levy to fund public transit in Metro Vancouver. This despite the vehicle levy being commonly used in other cities, including Montreal, Seattle, and the bustling metropolis of Gatineau, Quebec.
a map of potential huge transit cuts from spring 2025 with text overlaid that says "is transit doomed to always be in crisis?"

If were unironically doing price controls then I think we’re past the pretending stage for the rest too

Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Why do you think that is? I don’t know what the real numbers are on fare evasion here but the agencies clearly think it’s real and the response I get when it’s brought up is either to tell me to send people to jail for skipping a 3 dollar fare or why defunding services is actually awesome

I think it's safe to call the urbanized part of the Bay Area a single city for practical purposes? At least SF and the inner East Bay if you want to be a bit conservative. There's no way to get "real" numbers since everyone defines it differently but metro area is way better than municipalities
110
Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
this depends entirely on where you draw completely arbitrary municipal boundaries. By this standard Ottawa is bigger than Vancouver, San Francisco, and Boston, which is obvious nonsense

Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

I'm not talking about SAS, I'm talking about ie bus modernization projects in mid-sized cities, where it's impossible to get munis on board without selling them some shiny BRT project that then gets all the surplus extraction stuff going
110
Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
clearly it's largely a skill issue on our part but its also basically impossible to build up that kind of capacity in the system as it is
110
Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Well, sure, because nobody trusts that anyone will greenlight another project in a generation. It's pretty hard to do incremental long-term improvements if you think it will get canned midway through because someone who thinks anything other than roads are a waste of time will axe your small project
110
Pseudotsuga @pseudotsuga86.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I think a more fundamental issue is cases where everything turns into a megaproject because everyone involved thinks this is their only chance to get what they want, which is the idea that maybe-smaller but more consistent funding is supposed to solve, no? I thought that was part of the idea

Kind of amazing how underappreciated “make the buses go faster” would save service hours, free up bus availability, and actually sell more fares, all of which are positives on a transit agency’s balance sheet

having a bunch of incumbents decide to nope out is still not exactly confidence-inspiring though! Especially if you've got heavy hitters like Ravi going

I think the city is fairly easy to circle, this worldview holds that these 'transplants' are vapid vampires who consume and deplete culture and talent without contributing to it themselves
