At the state level, resistance to Christian nationalism is strongly correlated with Democratic representation in state legislatures and with religious diversity. Christian nationalism resisters are concentrated in states where Democrats hold larger majorities in their state legislatures.

Resistance to Christian nationalism is strongest among non-Christians, but majorities of several Christian groups qualify as Rejecters or Skeptics, including Hispanic Catholics (71%), white Catholics (62%), white mainline/non-evangelical Protestants (61%), and Orthodox Christians (60%).

More Americans hold favorable views of Pope Leo XIV than Trump (56% vs. 34%). 75% of white Catholics hold favorable views of Pope Leo, and 46% hold favorable views of Trump. Latino Catholics are more than 40 points more likely to hold favorable views of Pope Leo (64%) than Trump (23%).

Americans are more likely to say they would prefer “the U.S. to be a reliable neighbor that cooperates with other nations and only uses military force as a last resort” than “the U.S. to be known as a mighty nation that does not hesitate to use military force to defend our interests” (70% vs. 27%).

Americans are divided on whether the American Dream — that if you work hard, you’ll get ahead — still holds true today (49% agree vs. 50% disagree). These views have become more pessimistic since 2024 when 55% of Americans agreed.

Abortion legality opponents are more likely than abortion legality supporters to hold pronatalist, patriarchal, and traditional gender views. 55% of abortion legality opponents favor policies that encourage more Americans to have children, compared with 34% of abortion legality supporters.

Since 2013, the share of Republicans who identify as Christian has remained consistent (86% in 2013 vs 84% in 2025), while Democrats have seen a decrease from 70% to 57%. Democrats are more likely to be religiously unaffiliated (34%) or non-Christian (8%) than Republicans (13% and 4%, respectively).

Overall, younger Americans are less likely to identify as Christian than older Americans, a trend that has held true since 2013. Around three-quarters of Americans 65 and older (76%) and 50-64 (72%) identify as Christian, compared with 60% of those 30-49 and 54% of those 18-29.

There is little evidence that Americans are returning to church in higher numbers. In 2025, 26% of Americans attended religious services weekly, down from 31% in 2013. The share of Americans who seldom or never attend religious services has increased from 42% in 2013 to 53% in 2025.

Last year, we polled Americans on their views toward birthright citizenship, finding that 67% favor the “U.S. Constitution’s existing guarantee that all children who are born in the United States are automatically granted U.S. citizenship, regardless of their parents’ citizenship status."

NEW: PRRI’s latest survey finds that 35% of Americans rate President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration favorably, compared with 61% who rate his actions unfavorably. The survey was conducted among a representative sample of 5,479 adults living in all 50 states between Feb. 10-18, 2026.
