4. Obviously, the big problem is the economy. Post-covid inflation ate up incomes. Since Donald Trump returned to office, it's only gotten worse. Every extra dollar goes into the gas tank. It's always been hard to make a living as a writer. These days, it's harder still.

3. Since then, a lot has changed. There are more newsletters for readers to choose from. The internet is smaller, thanks to oligarchs buying up most of it and putting up walls. (I do not and cannot get the attention I once did on Twitter. Thanks to Elon Musk, that site is a black box to me.)

These victories were achieved through the efforts of Civil Rights activists, along with support from Neiman Marcus president Stanley Marcus, who was an early advocate for desegregation. The Neiman Marcus Dallas store manager purportedly warned Marcus that he would destroy his business this way.

The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky lunch spot frequented by Dallas elites. Later, they welcomed Black shoppers to come and buy clothes without restrictions.

For instance, they had to try on clothes over their clothes, put on protective covers when trying on hats, or weren't allowed to make returns once they brought the clothes home. These policies stemmed from racist fears that white customers would refuse merchandise previously worn by Black shoppers.

Wow! Schmitt didn’t just get it wrong, his team was warned the texts were unvetted, but he used them anyway. Not only that, Chuck Grassley’s Judiciary staff left the texts out of its own hearing memo. Schmitt’s team went digging for them, then used them to accuse Jack Smith of perjury.
