Victoria Govt says reducing land tax will deliver cost-of-living relief. But for renters & home buyers, cheaper landholding means more pressure as property investment becomes more attractive. As we told Yahoo! Finance we should replace stamp duty ➡️ land tax. au.finance.yahoo.com/news/landlor...
yahoo! finance clipping:
Landlord who bought 9 properties in 6 months to benefit from controversial tax change
"What we should be doing is getting rid of stamp duty, and we want to transition in that direction instead."
While the new Labor leader characterised it as a way to deliver cost of living relief, Fahey described it not as tax reform, but as "a tax rettreat".
"It is a betrayal of working Victorians to make it cheaper to hold valuable land while leaving taxes on work, enterprise and moving house in place."

Ben Carroll wants to match the Libs’ plan to raise Vic’s land tax threshold from $50k to $300k. But cheaper landholding won’t help renters or homeowners. We need a tax shift: less tax on jobs and moving, more on land and resources. Read more: www.prosper.org.au/2026/10/land... #VICPol
It is a betrayal of working Victorians to make it cheaper to hold valuable land while leaving taxes on work, enterprise and moving house in place.

If Victoria wants genuine tax reform, it should remove stamp duty, reduce payroll tax, and shift the tax burden towards economic rents.

Tax the land, not the move.
Tax the unearned, not the earned.

Text reads: $11 billion of public assets are being given away free every year. We wouldn’t accept this if we were giving away state land, ports, or toll roads, so we shouldn’t accept it in the case of development rights.

It has been too long coming. At this stage of the economic cycle, the budget should be in surplus. It should not be adding tens of billions of dollars every year to the mountain of public debt. Sixteen years after the release of the tax review commissioned by the Rudd government, our tax system should be supporting much better budget outcomes. It should be underwriting much stronger productivity growth. It should be delivering a much better deal for young Australian workers. And it should be delivering to Australians a much bigger share of the resource rents being extracted by the foreign multinationals exploiting our finite natural resources. So, this budget doesn’t fix everything. Continue reading...
