I have an interesting view of a bunch of recent UVM buildings that didn’t exist when I went to school here, but unfortunately, not of much foliage which you’re right should be getting close to peak. I hope I get out of here in time to see it from home where I would have a nice view

One good thing here is that the hospital food at UVMMC is better than most. Not always— I have eaten a lot of extremely overcooked chicken breast and fish fillets but today I had this: the best thing I’ve eaten since I got landed in this place almost 10 days ago.
a sort of semi Caesar salad with a nicely cooked, not overcooked hunk of salmon on it that I actually enjoyed

Food is ok but overcooked. Definitely better than most hospital food

Hah. I’ll learn about side effects tomorrow when the Methotrexate starts. The steroids are nice though.

looks like at the end of the week I’ll be home for maybe three weeks and then then back in here for another week’s chemo treatment, and back-and-forth like that.

Saved this post so that I can do a little readingand respond to it from the viewpoint of an Albers influenced artist, at a time when I’m not stuck in the hospital and unsuccessfully trying to type on an iPhone keypad

Well, I hope yours doesn’t migrate and I’ll keep you posted what happens to mine. They are saying steroids and methotrexate to start with.

Oh God now I’ve got to write it, huh? Assuming the drugs work?

Proportionwheel @proportionwheel.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Thank you— I think a brain lesion is sort of inherently serious but the best news I’ve had since I got here is that what they think this is is reasonably treatable and 1 of the drugs they are gonna give me should make me feel better fairly quickly so that’s good news. Thank you for your well wish

The word of the day is lymphoma which has apparently migrated to my brain and taken up residence there. The good news is that it is somewhat treatable so maybe I will be around long enough to write a detailed account of this whole experience or maybe I just won’t feel like doing that

One thing is clear and that is that hospitals suck even very good ones like this one and believe me I think I’m getting excellent care but it’s still sucks

A very brief note to the very small number of people with whom I occasionally interact here: I am hospitalized with some sort of a weird lesion on my brain and no clear diagnosis yet. When this is over, you will either never hear from me again or I will post a more detailed account.

Frankly, to me, the decision to go to burning man sounds more disqualifying than the hair.

My thoughts on existential risk: * Humanity isn't going to be wiped out any time soon. * Negligible chance that AI by itself causes catastrophic damage to humanity (millions dead). * Some nontrivial chance that human beings will leverage AI to help them do something catastrophically harmful.

there may be much learned about the Universe and our place in it, by way of close study of Lunar soil. To me a SETI breakthrough seems less likely than a breakthrough in Astrophysics or Cosmology or adjacent

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

Probably it was a station-by-station decision (or lack of one) from the feeds. I was in my mid-fifties, watching in a YMCA men’s lounge in Burlington, VT. I remember thinking about those falling poeple and trying to grasp what I was seeing.

Contra the CIA, State Dept Intel knew there was nothing there worth worrying about, and told Powell that before his speech. I recall reading about that months(?) later, maybe at TPM. Now, the analyst who talked to Powell is my neighbor and friend. Makes for interesting conversations.

This belatedly explains so much to me. The “nonverbal communication” thing hit the campus of my alma mater in 1968 when the campus chaplain, also a psychology prof, started holding workshops about it. I met my (still) wife at one, where we were paired off to try to nonverbally communicate.
