TIL opium comes from ὄπιον (ópion), a diminutive form of ὀπός (opós). [I had been finding it amusing how much otium (Latin for leisure) sounded like opium, so I had to check out the actual etymology.]

Perhaps I'm not the best financial advisor. Homes are for Shelter. Wine is for drinking. Art is for inspiration. Antiquities are the responsibility of their country and cultures of origin. Coin collections... no idea what those for... ...teaching?

I wondered how much I'd written about various RRC types on my blog. The answer is about 53%. But with much higher coverage in certain areas like 82% of RRC 300-399 and 75% of 400-499. Should I ever get bored maybe I'll try to fill in the blanks. Or maybe not. livyarrow.org/rrc-index/

"bracelet consists of nine coins ... all worn (perhaps because of their modern use as a necklace) [the 1960] caption says “monete d’argento campane trovate a Loreto del Barone Mazzoccolo,” so the coins would have been found in the Loreto area, where there was an earlier temple site" 1/

Publication day is great, but PROOFS DAY is sometimes more thrilling. IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. It feels like the moment we shift from theoretical publication to manifested publication. It's been a hot minute since I've seen my historiographical stuff on the printed page. This chapter is timely.

Pre-8 am post about a lovely occupational relief in the Liverpool Museum. livyarrow.org/2026/09/18/d... [there are so many fabulous antiquities not on display but instead stuck in deep storage, particularly in underfunded regional museums]

Research reality at underfunded HE institutions... I love my job. I believe in CUNY. It is way harder to do research here than at some places. Just facts. I don't even begrudge the budgeting decisions about subscriptions when the roof is caving in on the physical library and archives.

I don't really endorse this meme but I needed something to get your eye balls. QUESTION: Do you have a PR article you'd recommend on Tech Bro Stocisim? Or at least something more thoughtful or deeper than most hot takes on Marcus Aurelius in Silicon Valley?

I use LLMs. Not to write. I like writing. But it really saves time with data extraction and manipulation. See this prompt. Are there errors in the transcription? Yup. Is it easier to fix these errors than manually transcribe or try to copy paste absolutely. 1/

While the Romans did have things the look like modern fantasy war-hammers, really they were just quarry tools. Still the spikes are bad ass and I wouldn't recommend sneaking up on a Roman stone mason in a dark alley.

This dedication was found in the same Laconian danctuary. I love the close similarity in the depiction of 'necessary' personal objects. This 'compact' has space for only three pigments . BM 1861,0523.1

Isn't lovely how little has changed?! Notice in the bottom right corner the makeup "compact" with six pigments and a protective lid! Above it the funny thing like a thumb is the pestle of a mortar for grinding fine powders. BM 1861,0523.2

One of the things I love about maintaining a blog as an open notebook of my research ideas and thoughts. Is the ease with which I can drop in materials to older posts and accumulate material on a theme over many many years. It may go nowhere but it gives me pleasure. livyarrow.org/2021/05/26/n...

I've been thinking about the aquila in the triumphal car under Augustus. I think it probably is a visual attempt to credit the legions with the victory rather than centering oneself as commander/triumphator. Probably not an original thought but a nice bit of rhetoric.

Most of us know the tavern scene frescoes Pompeii (VI 14 35-36) because they were cut out and sent to MANN BUT thanks to Annette Haug, ERC Grant 681269 DÉCOR we now have many pictures of the very similar set still in situ (VI.10.1/19) pompeiiinpictures.com/pompeiiinpic...
