Well, the message here is the same as it was on July 27th. Having said that, there are now many conversations ongoing so I am still hopeful.

Tim O'Brien @proftimob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Not yet been published. UKRI didn't allocate STFC enough money to fund all its projects/facilities. That is at the root of it, not just JB but all the other cuts to particle physics, astronomy and national science facilities.
010
Tim O'Brien @proftimob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
...the visitor centre at JB (of which I am the Director) is not dependent on this STFC funding. However, its existence is predicated on it being at a working observatory with operating telescopes. Take those away and it loses what makes it special...

Tim O'Brien @proftimob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
...statements that STFC are still funding research at Jodrell Bank through SKAO are only true in the sense that the offices of the SKAO are at JB. SKAO is an intergovernmental organisation entirely independent of Jodrell Bank Observatory and even the UK.

Tim O'Brien @proftimob.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
There are repeated statements of "Jodrell Bank is not closing". Jodrell Bank is the name of a hamlet from which Jodrell Bank Observatory took its name. This decision means Jodrell Bank Observatory will no longer be an observatory, in my view that is effectively closure...

This is interesting. We welcomed the PM's pledge at the despatch box, saying "there must be a way to save jodrell bank". But we do not yet know how this might be achieved, or indeed what is meant by saving us. As yet nothing has changed since the original decision.

Star Trek first aired on US TV 60 years ago today. BUT it didn't appear on our screens here in the UK until nearly three years later. In fact, on July 12 1969, just a week before the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Quite appropriate really. I do remember both these events.

Eclipse ready here. 1500 visitors expected. The Sun is out (as always at Jodrell of course). I have the 7-metre telescope tracking the Sun and measuring its radio power. Since I last tried this 11 years ago I don't know if it will work. I will share updates.
Selfie in front of Lovell Telescope Graphic radio power versus time from 2pm today looking roughly flat, slightly declining. Jodrell web page with photo of 7-metre telescope and description of how it is used by undergraduates at University of Manchester.
