Fortunately, the mistake does not affect any of the welfare cost calculations in our published paper since we never used the formula directly; it was only used in the paper to build intuition. All of the welfare results in our published paper come from solving our model numerically.

Our interpretation of the results is that the fact that the mortality effects are largest for working-age men suggests at least some role for the direct effects of job loss, but the fact that there are mortality effects for other age groups suggests that's also not the only channel.

The research design assumes that the increase in deaths caused by NAFTA can be identified by geographic variation in exposure to the tariff reductions, but we don't know how much comes from the NAFTA-induced job losses directly versus other channels.

I think it's more about the risks of using Census/ACS/CPS survey samples than state-level designs, per se (+ the usual concerns with weak instruments). For example, the state-level Medicaid expansion natural experiment seems to work perfectly well IMO.

‘ICE Goes Masked for a Single Reason’ www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/o...
“ICE goes masked for a single reason — to terrorize Americans into quiescence,” a federal judge, William Young, wrote in a blistering 161-page First Amendment ruling handed down last week. “In all our history we have never tolerated an armed masked secret police,” he continued. The judge, a Reagan appointee, compared immigration agents to “cowardly desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan” and declared that federal efforts to deport outspoken protesters amounted to a “full-throated assault” on freedom of speech. “Carrying on in this fashion, ICE brings indelible obloquy to this administration and everyone who works in it.”

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving." Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.
Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).
