When someone is found to have done something wrong by an undercover reporter, I find the defense ”but it was entrapment" to be rather peculiar. It’s simultaneously a confession of _wanting_ to do that wrong thing, while also being stupid too dim to realise they were being played.

The UN has voted to adopt map standards that show Africa at its true scale. Interestingly, it’s very close to the West Wing subplot in S2E16, where cartographers argued for replacing Mercator with the Gall-Peters projection. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
The UN has voted to adopt a map standard that shows Africa at its correct scale, a formal move away from the distortions of the Mercator projection.

It’s notably close to a subplot in The West Wing (Season 2, Episode 16), where the “Organization of Cartographers for Social Equality” tried to persuade C.J. Cregg to replace Mercator with the Gall–Peters projection.

The parallels are striking: both debates argue that distorted maps reinforce old power hierarchies by shrinking Africa and inflating Europe/North America.

The difference is that The West Wing treated it as a quirky advocacy moment, while the UN vote is a serious, Africa‑led diplomatic effort using newer projections like Equal Earth.
