There we were, absurdly high above Manhattan, trying to raise money while Gloria Steinem gave two powerful publishing men hell about advertisers and journalism. It seemed a fundraising disaster. It wasn’t. Bennack later became a major donor to the Chair. That was Gloria. 8/8
Final congratulations on work well done!

Instead, she harangued Frank about a story on the exploitation of Colombian coffee workers which, as I remember it, had been pulled after pressure from advertisers. This went on for some time. It was quite intense. And wonderful. 7/8

We talked about English socks, I think to put me at my ease, and Gloria and the two men exchanged memories of the old magazine world. We were there to raise money. I assumed at some point we would get around to doing that. Gloria was having none of it. 6/8

There was cream carpet of a thickness I had never encountered, and an extraordinary view across Manhattan and Central Park. We were met by Frank Bennack Jr., Hearst’s Executive Vice Chairman and former CEO, and Gil Maurer, former president of Hearst Magazines. 5/8

The foyer of Hearst Tower on Eighth Avenue is a bit like Newark Departures: crazy busy, security everywhere. But someone immediately appeared: “Gloria. And you must be Jonathan.” We were whisked into a private elevator and up to the 44th floor. 4/8

I was, I confess, completely star-struck. I met Gloria in her New York apartment, which someone should surely preserve as it is, with its extraordinary memorabilia. But the episode I remember most was when Gloria and I went to Hearst to ask for money. 3/8

The Chair was the idea of the brilliant Alison Bernstein, who had come to Rutgers from the Ford Foundation. I worked with Alison and a steering committee including Geraldine Laybourne and Subha Barry. Then Alison died in June 2016, leaving me as the Rutgers lead. 2/8

Gloria Steinem died today. One memory of her. When I arrived at Rutgers from Loughborough in 2015, I immediately became involved in the campaign to fund the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture, and Feminist Studies. 1/8

The book covers crying and upset, laughter, and anger, using intensive analysis of real cases. There's a full methods chapter for researchers interested to do this kind of work themselves, and a theoretical chapter mapping the relationship to existing frameworks.

Kenneth Gergen calls it "an entirely new landscape of understanding and inquiry into the emotions" Moving emotional study out of the laboratory and into real-life settings where emotion's interdependent functioning in ongoing relationships can finally be examined.

Emotionography works with video and audio recordings of real interaction: child protection helplines, family mealtimes, therapy sessions, political interviews. Transcribed in enough detail to catch what participants themselves attend to. This is emotion in the wild, not the lab.

What you won't find: emotion as it actually unfolds, in real conversation, in real settings. That gap is what this book fills. We feel that no course on emotion will be complete without it.

Open any handbook of emotion research. You'll find basic emotion theory, appraisal theory, behavioural ecology. Experiments, scales, surveys, maybe intensive interviews. Impressive coverage.

There is, of course, an intriguing circularity in using experiments to find out if there are experimental (demand) effects.

Arlie Russell Hochschild called emotionography: “a magnifying glass… to see, in breathtaking detail, the expression of emotion as it occurs in situations both alarming and real.”

We study emotion using recordings of natural interaction (audio/video from real settings), analysed with conversation analysis and discursive psychology to show how emotion is displayed, oriented to, and managed moment-to-moment.

#8 Lazy claims about squeamishness or bias obscure the real bind: govt frameworks + financial erosion + political hostility particularly from the right. That is what’s crippling UK universities.

#7 It’s glib to sneer at “VR caves” or gender theory syllabi. The real crisis is a system trying to do more with less while navigating hostile policy & public misunderstanding.
