“No-brainer”? Only if you ignore the brainy bits. UK gas can be cleaner to produce than shipped LNG, but Norwegian pipeline gas is cleaner still, and most climate damage comes when fuel is burned. The C of E didn’t merely tolerate slavery. Clergy financed slave-trading companies; its missionary arm owned Africans for 120 years, branded them “Society”, tortured them & later received compensation. It even sanctioned an edited “Slave Bible” to teach obedience. Repentance requires repair.

Britain’s slavery wealth wasn’t confined to plantations or port merchants. It helped capitalise the Bank of England & shaped banking, insurance and public finance. The institutions endured, the wealth accumulated, & the enslaved received nothing. Following the money destroys the comforting myths.
