I got in a solid 75 minutes of writing today behind a closed office door. Not too bad for the beginning of the semester.

Was I outside doing yard work in this nonsense? Yes, yes I was.

Florida State University’s political science department is hiring this year at the junior level in American Politics and Comparative Politics. Applicants for both jobs should have strong substantive and quant methods skills but otherwise the fields are open. The postings should be on ejobs soon.

🚨New article! Published with @conflictmanagement.bsky.social 🚨 Link: doi.org/10.1177/0738... Does the type of previous war defeat impact future conflict? /1

Focusing on variation in war defeats has implications beyond future fights. But, you'll have to wait for my book to hear about that. It's a good paper, give it a read.

Absolute defeats suppress MIDs for a short period of time and have a strong influence on minimizing future wars. The redirection impact is much stronger. States suffering an absolute defeat avoid fighting the previous imposer. This is especially true for wars. /3

The premise of the paper starts from the notion that not all defeats are equal. Here, I argue that absolute defeats impact future conflict. These defeats have both a suppression and redirection impact on future conflict. /2

Hmmm, should I do some yard work today? *checks that the temp is 98 and the heat index is 112*. Nope. I'm staying inside.

I'm a huge fan of Messi, but Argentina had no business even being in the finals. And for all the hype Yamal was getting all tournament, he really never showed up. Time to turn it off before the trophy presentation.

Very sporting of England to switch defenders with France at halftime. Defense optional soccer is a lot of fun.

Many of the videos/pictures showing hyper low passes as counter evidence are from restricted areas where only photographers are allowed. The low shots from Pensacola Beach are from the pier that is not open to the public during shows.

2. It was absolutely wrong, and should never happen again. Safety is paramount. Just because nothing bad happened this time doesn't make it OK. 3. For those saying the Blues do this all the time - no they don't. Passes THIS low over a large group of people is not normal.

I see Pensacola is again in the news for the wrong reasons. My 2 cents that nobody asked for as a resident of Pensacola for 10 years. 1. I would've loved to be there for that low pass, and I'm a little mad I missed it. But I understand not everyone feels that way.

England absolutely deserved that loss. Parking the bus after scoring and daring Messi to be Messi?

Always interesting to see how this plays out across the SUS. We were already told there was basically a highering freeze in the college regardless of budget. If you're not STEM or business, you're not getting lines.

If you're going to keep using the naval data, and you should, be sure to use the most up-to-date version. Enjoy the new data! We do have some gift links for the article, if you're interested, email me. ⚓🛳️🚢 You can find the new data and replication files at the link below: doi.org/10.7910/DVN/...

So, you can better tailor your measure of naval tonnage, and proportion, to better match your theory/concepts. We also have a quite a few new count variables that could be useful as well. Finally, we correct errors from the original dataset. /4

Brian Crisher @profbcrisher.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
We went with a "chose your own adventure" type approach with the new variables. You don't want to use the amphibious tonnage data? Fine, we have it separate. You want to include amphibious assault ships but not the rest? Fine, we kept it separate. Even ballistic submarine tonnage is separate. /3

Brian Crisher @profbcrisher.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
What's in the updated data? Well, a lot, actually. First, we have updated the dataset to 2025. Second, we have expanded the dataset to include amphibious capabilities starting from 1955. If it's larger than a tank landing ship, it's included. Third, there is a host of new variables for you to use /2

Third, we create many new variables to use in your analyses. One of the things we did was to have a "create your own adventure" approach to the variables. Don't want to include amphibious tonnage? Fine, we have that separate. You want amphibious assault ships but not the rest? /3

Brian Crisher @profbcrisher.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
What does the update contain? Well, a lot actually. First, the data has been updated through to 2025. Second, we've expanded the ship types coded to now included amphibious capabilities. If it's bigger than a tank landing ship, it's included. The amphibious data goes back to 1955. /2
