NEW: H-2A worker Carlos Vargas Moreno experienced a catastrophic heat stroke when his employer, Florida Orange Gold, subjected him to unsafe working conditions. The same company was cited two years prior for the heat-related death of H-2A worker Carmen Sebastian Hernandez Mosqueda.

It was 4 p.m. & 90 degrees when farmworker Carlos Vargas Moreno set out to weed a watermelon field in Goldsboro, North Carolina, on July 19, 2022. Just before 6 p.m., he collapsed. He was later diagnosed with heat stroke. Since then, the 38-year-old man is unable to walk or care for himself.

As part of a survey of LGBTQIA+ Kentuckians conducted by Prism, 1 anonymous respondent from a rural part area said that healthcare providers who are “explicitly welcoming” of LGBTQIA+ patients are rare.
