A new article on my website about a small thing that has bothered me for a long time: Should you normalize RGB values by 255 or 256? 30fps.net/pages/255-vs...
A number line where 3-bit integers in the range [0..7] being mapped to real numbers with two approaches: the standard (top) and alternative (bottom).

On the X-axis we’ve got a number line and the locations of brown circles on it represent the decoded floating-point values. The numbers inside are the integer inputs. Each integer has arrows pointing to it; these show a range of floating-point values that round to it. I’ll call these ranges “bins” in the rest of this article.

do YouTube video essayists know that titling your video in the form "The Adjective Noun of Adjective Nouns" or anything similar immediately signals that it's absolutely not worth watching at all

We made a Nintendo 64 demo for Revision 2025! 📺 youtu.be/v3wYV6gxJII It has baked lighting with normal mapping, specular shading (at the end), and of course bloom. The beautiful song was made by @prismbeings.com with guitar performed by soundcloud.com/sou_andrade Some development notes below.
A screenshot of a graphics demo with an arched outdoor hallway made of rock walls with the sky seen behind, with the out-of-frame sun casting its light to the cobblestone floor and walls.

I got tired of people relying on other people's code to build demos (or games for that matter) so here's a tutorial in 40 steps and ~400 lines of C++ on how to build a renderer (with music) in DX11: gargaj.github.io/demos-for-du...

My father-in-law is a producer. He is insanely gifted. We were listening to Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites together and I asked him what it would cost to make the FM8 growl patch today. I will never forget his answer… “We can't, we don't know how to do it.”

add to this RME TotalMix, Digicheck NG and iLok, then Linux might be a viable consideration for music production

I wrote about video game shadow techniques on my blog: 📜 30fps.net/pages/videog... I've always liked different ways to draw shadows in games. I went and tried to find visually distinct examples and explain their differences. I hope you'll find it inspiring!
Super Mario 64 (1996, Nintendo 64) uses blob shadows for characters.
Left: A blob shadow overlapping with tree shadows. Center: A blob shadow getting clipped using a hardware decal feature. Right: All moving characters and objects have their own shadow. The clipped shadow inside that transparent bubble shows the limitation of the Nintendo 64 decal feature. Screenshots taken in the ares emulator. Left: Crash Bandicoot: Warped (1998, PlayStation) renders shadow textures at runtime. Right: Soldier of Fortune (2000, PC) also does but at a lower resolution.

bluesky image upload backend still needs a lot of work… resizing to max 2000px on the longest edge is barely acceptable, but always recompressing the input to ~500kb JPGs is just terrible. and none of this is even documented anywhere.

every so often i think about people buying $500 aeron chairs, they're awful, bland chairs you see an aeron chair in an office you know someone's about to say "we're all family here" and ask you to come in on a weekend they also suck at being a chair too, deeply uncomfortable

as much as we lament the death of the public online forum as they're being replaced by less accessible discord communities, let's not get ahead of ourselves and forget what the reality often is

if you're publishing open source code, your enemies will use it. personal enemies, political enemies, class enemies. they will use it and derive benefit from it and there is _nothing you can do to stop it_. (no, licenses aren't it.)

as twitter gradually evaporated over the course of about a year i severely lost interest in contributing to any sort of public facing social media. building an audience is utterly frustrating and i'm not sure if i feel up to it anymore, and the still persistent volatility certainly doesn't help.

I think one of my struggles at this time of everyone flocking to alternative apps, besides desperately trying to follow all of the people in all of the places, is it’s hit during a time where I feel I have very little to actually say anywhere.
