☞︎ILLBIENT DNB '90-'05 (11 hrs)
This 5-part, 11-hour mix is a survey of a nebulous sub-genre known as illbient. According to wiki, "illbient is a genre of electronic music and an art movement that originated among hip hop-influenced experimental musicians from New York City in the early 1990s." The word "illbient" is a combination of "ill" and "ambient," but that hardly describes what the genre actually is.

When I think of illbient music, I imagine a blend of experimental trip-hip and liquid drum 'n' bass. For my money, DJ Wally is the quintessential illbient artist, alongside the likes of DJ Olive's We™ and DJ Soul Slinger. For the purpose of this mix, illbient is going to be basically any track that sounds like drum 'n' bass made by an act that does not primarily make drum 'n' bass, but rather artists typically more trip-hip, big beat, and turntablist related, as is the focus of this 1990-2005 series.

As such, this mix is not strictly what purists would call illbient or DnB, but rather a distinct vibe from a past generation, from the golden age of sampling. A whole bunch of these tracks are songs that I've always thought should be on a DnB mix, but I doubted anyone else would put them on such a thing, so I did my best. Anyway...
