The worst news to wake up to, I’m really shocked. We never met personally, but she was so kind and reached out to me to help me when I was in Belfast for EAA, and ended up in a hostel in an unfortunate location to advice me on safety. We had some lovely chats. So sorry for her loved ones.

There has been a lot of work made by the team of Nick Conard regarding the spoilheaps from the early excavations at the Swabian Albs like Vogelherd. It’s mainly Upper Paleolithic though.

Finding myself moved to a new/old city trying to find a new social circle well into my fourties proves harder than expected. But having the chance to go out and see a live play of Pratchetts “Guards, Guards” on a random Thursday certainly felt nicely warm and nostalgic.

I appreciated to see how much we learned the last twenty years about those sites, and the artistic contextualisation in the back brought back memories of endless nightskies over Göbekli Tepe, where we once spent a night in a van. But the airy-light architecture didn’t do the topic justice imho.
A look into into a room of the exhibition, a display case with a rounded poster begins showing a large female statuette. Other rounded white textile features structure the interior. A stone head of a leopard showing his teethA lovely Halaf style sitting female figurine made from silver in a display, no head preserved. An artistic image of the Karahantepe cistern, a rock cut structure under a rock terrace, with t-shaped pillars in it. The artwork shows it with water in it under a starry sky.

Barely more than two weeks before it ends I finally found an opportunity last week to visit the „Building Community“ Exhibition in Berlin, covering the Taş Tepeler sites in Upper Mesopotamia. It was a bittersweet trip down memory lane, meeting old familiar faces. 🏺
Abroad set off concrete stairs is leading up to a cubicluar entrance of the James Simon Galleryin Berlin.
A poster hangs beside if the entrance, showing two stone masks from the Neolithic. A view into the main room of the exhibition, showing stilized t-pillars made of white textile constructions. The 3d reconstruction of a stone frieze showing a bull and a leopard with two men. On the right are two display cases, behind the frieze is a large black and white photo of the original.
Me, a white Woman wearing black clothes, glasses and a red updo standing beside a stilized life sized male figurine made from beige stone and with obsidian eyes.

For almost a century, scholars believed there were as few as 200,000 people in #Australia when the first British colonists arrived in 1788. New research suggests that estimate was off by several million. A related study links the devastating arrival of smallpox to the "First Fleet." @science.org 🧪
