Yes, I’m that person who tells whoever will listen what my cat did that day, with full-body acting of his part and insistence that he really did say all the lines I attributed to him. Nevermind that he mostly just stares at me, the talking goes on in here 🧠

I think I will draw some Boss soon-ish. I love to talk about my son and there are things he does that need images to accompany them, as I can’t act them out for my internet friends the same way I do for my family irl.

I originally copied my Twitter’s following list and hastily followed a bunch of folk who were recommended to me by the app at the time, but looking at my feed now I realize I actually don’t recognize many or even like their art. 🫣 Best wishes to them but that’s a whoops on my part lol.

Going to have to rebuild my following list here, as I haven’t touched it in over a year. Was originally following 300-ish ppl but I’m sure it’s going to drop to less than 50, I’m still pruning it.

🦋 Welcome to Buesky! 🦋 It's long past time to leave the Nazi bar, and you'll have a much better time here. I updated this guide due to the influx of users fleeing Grok's new AI bullshit. Share widely for all the newcomers!
Tips: moving from Xitter to Bsky

Before you start following people, fill out your profile! Bio, PFP, banner, and post at least 5 to 10 things. Just reuse your top 10 banger tweets—recycling is encouraged! This way, people will know you aren’t a bot, will see what you are about, and might follow back.

Turn off NSFW filters in Settings > Moderation > Enable Adult Contentand at the bottom on Settings > Moderation > Bluesky Mod Service

Find your friends from the hellsite using Sky-Follower-Bridge.devNot perfect, but it will find the majority of the people you were following.Beware of fake tools that ask for money!

Follow a few feeds related to your interests. In bsky you choose what kind of content you want to see. You can pin feeds (into tabs) to the top of your timeline, and you always have access to the Following feed which shows nothing but who you choose to follow.

Block often. Don’t interact with trolls. Don’t quote dunk, comment, nothing. Let them rot in silence, take away their oxygen and they’ll asphixiate. This is the Bsky way.

Turn off language filters in Settings > Languages > Content Languages
Or you won’t see posts from anyone in Japan, Germany, etc, in your feeds, even if they only post a cool image with no text. Weird, but trust me on this one. Uncheck all to see all posts.

Fuck content scrapers. Do not let that trash overwhelm this site, do not share their stolen content. You can block them all with two clicks by going to joabaldwin.com/scrapers and on the top-right clicking on Subscribe > Block Accounts (I know, “Subscribe” is an odd thing to name it, but that’s how block lists work).

Use alt text to make images accessible. Helps for translations, readability, findability, and users with slow internet. Turn on Settings > Accessibility > Require alt text before posting

It takes time to rebuild, but the best time to do it is right now. Use your last tweets to tell everyone to move, then stop posting. Twitter is a Nazi/AI/bot/crypto cesspit.

If you switch to bsky it will be vitally important to not use the Discover feed and instead pin this one

I think people should make an effort to sincerely tell people who improve their life what they mean to them. Have a boss that really supported you? Tell them that repeatedly. Have a best friend who you love? Tell them in detail how you appreciate them. Love an artist? Tell them why. Life is hard. 🏴‍☠️

Because the truth is I just want to like drawing again. I miss it.

Trying to decouple the two has been a trying process. It's necessary to a point, as it's not healthy. But I think there is a truth in there somewhere that I am meant to be a creative and I always will be. I just need to figure out how to be one in a healthy way, and survive in this world.

But when faced with needing to "put up or shut up" and make money and a career happen, I suddenly hated art and myself because I wasn't good enough to make money. My art wasn't good enough to make money. I couldn't survive as an artist, I wasn't wanted as an artist. My identity *was* art.

I feel like I made progress (?) when I realized last week that I felt happiest drawing and drew the most when I was in K-12 and "being an artist" wasn't my main mission, graduating school was. Same for my first try at college when I thought I'd be a creative artist after it.

I was looking online for help regarding the fear of and perfectionism with drawing I developed, and found "Art & Fear" recommended in an old Reddit thread. It arrived recently and I hope to start reading it soon. Capitalism + commodity culture has done a number on me.

I’ve never attempted to paint, sew, etc. for anyone except myself, and it feels great.

But as an adult attempting to become a professional, I realized simply liking to draw without internal motivation wasn’t enough. I started to hate it. Now I connect with art in other mediums and it feels much better.

Even before social media, I drew daily for a friend. I drew comics and illustrations every day at school to give to my friend with the hope she’d like them or even respond with her own drawings. So graduating to social media attention felt natural.

In retrospect most of my art production was for others and at the expectation of others. When I tried to find an identity in college for a portfolio, I struggled immensely. I didn’t know who I was outside of what other people wanted from me.

I’ve spent most of my life being “the girl who draws,” then went to college to get an animation/illustration degree. I never got a professional art job and instead I got really burnt out from drawing. As I shifted careers and focus on job hunting again, I’m re-examining my relationship with art.

There’s a lot I would like to re-do, as I’ve never drawn a plane before & it was a learning experience in a time crunch (I learned really late what was a thing he’s hype about, he’s pretty reserved about his interests). But I’m flattered he liked it so much that he framed it. 🥹

Still on a drawing hiatus, though I’ve been making other kinds of art. It’s been nice. Recently drew this P-51 Mustang for my step-dad for Father’s Day. He loves that model plane and I appreciate how much he’s stepped up as a parent in my life when he didn’t have to.

My mom’s birthday is today so I colored/painted this shot of a video she took during her recent vacation to Hawaii. She really enjoyed this view in particular.

Please be patient with me. I'm deciding whether or not I want to repost old art here or just start fresh. Probably the latter. I also want to make a new icon and banner soon. Anyway, nice to be here!
