More and more sites are having to set up defenses from AI bots. It is costly to provide online services and they were not built for bots. One can say that the AI companies are performing a global denial of service attack, which incurs costs to all of their competitors, as well as the rest of […]

Brad Smith says your milk is more regulated than AI, and he wants binding rules: kill switches, incident reports, telling victims. Honestly? Good list. It’s also the same Brad Smith whose company still hasn’t named a number in Granger. Self-regulation only works on the good companies, he says […]

CAPTCHAs are getting more difficult these days 🫪
parody of a CAPTCHA form, where the user is asked to select squares from an image of the ship of Theseus (a reference to Theseus's Paradox).

credits: unsure, i did not make this one and am unable to find it on reverse image search. it is NOT ai, as i had previously posted it back in 2022 but am resubmitting with alt text and a different caption.

All I wanted was Gitea 28. Instead: Nextcloud hit EOL and needed two upgrade hops, the disk filled up mid-rebuild twice thanks to a Syncthing share I forgot existed (187GB of .stversions!), and home-manager drifted again. Just a few hurdles on what I thought would be run a couple commands before […]

It's done. Paramount closed on Warner Bros. Tuesday, and the new company is just "Skydance." The states settled for production money and an editorial board, the FCC waved through the Gulf stake at staff level, and CNN's still fighting to get into the White House. The first post in this series […]

Five days. Again. OpenAI went from "too dangerous to go public" to "accept some bad things." Meanwhile Anthropic put the end of the world in its S-1 and kept the $2T IPO on schedule. Different font, same sentence: keep shipping, fund us. The bad things already have names and dates. They just […]

@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social Similar experience on the running once. I was going over to friends when I was a kid. Lightning hit his back yard maybe 50ish yards ahead. I swear I rotated and ran back to my house and my feet did not touch the ground till I hit the steps.🤣

Monday: OpenAI apologizes to Australia after its agents got into government health systems, and pauses tool-use training. Tuesday: launches always-on agents with their own computers and cuddly avatars. The IPO? Too unsafe for Wall Street. $30B privately? Fine. I cannot make this up […]

@petersuber I bet they are, it's hard to be sneaky nosey if people can easily find them. Also posing a problem for them if individuals decide to mess with them (not endorsing that by any means....but i've seen it happening on news).

@jcrabapple well there some of the closest competition in capabilities and if I'm not mistaken they approach the cost way differently. Technically I'm pretty sure I saw something the other day claiming most of the models are largely being broken relatively quickly removing the guardrails so […]

Turns out plenty of "prove you're human" checkboxes weren't checking anything. Cloudflare knew which ones, per widget, and built an AI tool to wire them up. Four days later they applied to become a certificate authority. The fix for concentration is more Cloudflare […]

Darwin Award: JATO Rocket Car: The Arizona Highway Patrol, when they came upon a pile of smoldering metal imbedded into the side of a cliff rising above the road, at the apex of a curve. The wreckage resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it was a car. The type of car was unidentifiable

Microsoft promised Indiana it would be a "good neighbor." Local churches asked what that's worth, and even let Microsoft name the number. The answer: $1M in one-time grants, a wall of sticky notes, and silence. blog.ppb1701.com/name-a-number #microsoft #datacenters #ai #bigtech […]

The PSN digital games settlement finally has real numbers: most people are getting somewhere between 91 cents and $33 in PlayStation Store credit.
