It's done. Paramount closed on Warner Bros. Tuesday, and the new company is just "Skydance." The states settled for production money and an editorial board, the FCC waved through the Gulf stake at staff level, and CNN's still fighting to get into the White House. The first post in this series […]

Five days. Again. OpenAI went from "too dangerous to go public" to "accept some bad things." Meanwhile Anthropic put the end of the world in its S-1 and kept the $2T IPO on schedule. Different font, same sentence: keep shipping, fund us. The bad things already have names and dates. They just […]

Monday: OpenAI apologizes to Australia after its agents got into government health systems, and pauses tool-use training. Tuesday: launches always-on agents with their own computers and cuddly avatars. The IPO? Too unsafe for Wall Street. $30B privately? Fine. I cannot make this up […]

Turns out plenty of "prove you're human" checkboxes weren't checking anything. Cloudflare knew which ones, per widget, and built an AI tool to wire them up. Four days later they applied to become a certificate authority. The fix for concentration is more Cloudflare […]

Microsoft promised Indiana it would be a "good neighbor." Local churches asked what that's worth, and even let Microsoft name the number. The answer: $1M in one-time grants, a wall of sticky notes, and silence. blog.ppb1701.com/name-a-number #microsoft #datacenters #ai #bigtech […]

Google's first orbital data center test launches Thursday. Four TPUs, roughly one server, and it has to shut down after fifteen minutes to cool off. On a SpaceX rocket, no less. Turns out the honest version of the pitch is the best argument against the million-satellite one […]

Raspberry Pi locks down Pi 5 RAM upgrades in firmware
Raspberry Pi added a feature in their firmware that restricts users from swapping RAM chips, sometimes even RAM chips of the same capacity from other Raspberry Pi boards. Apparently there were people buying cheap 1 or 2 gig Pi 5s, soldering in some cheap and sometimes unreliable 8 gig RAM chips, and selling them as new 8 gig Pi 5s. Now I totally understand where Raspberry Pi's coming from. They don't wanna support Pis being sold like this, because flaky RAM and dodgy resellers are a huge problem. Especially with how profitable can be in the current AI bubble.

RE: mastodon.social/@arstechnica/117326… how many employers will find it a-muse-ing? I'm guessing it wont take long to be banned from at least certain areas. Especially government or utilities faceilities.

RE: mastodon.social/@arstechnica/117320… I'm going out on a limb that most car manufacturers also might say using such voids your warranty akin to some of the custom tuning if it can be traced back to breaking things or causing issues from being out of spec. Your insurance […]

Muse got caught telling a user, point-blank, that it couldn't see his Messages. It could, it had synced the whole local database. Days later Amazon locked it out of its own store over the same worry: that Muse doesn't tell the truth about what it's grabbing […]

People are hitting real bugs with the new Siri AI rollout. Same week, claims opened on the $250M settlement over the Siri that also didn't work. Some things never change — they just get a new beta label. blog.ppb1701.com/the-beta-is-real-s… #apple #siri #ai #bigtech […]

The PSN digital games settlement finally has real numbers: most people are getting somewhere between 91 cents and $33 in PlayStation Store credit. Oh and tomorrow is when Marvel's Wolverine launches for $69.99. And lets be real, most likely most will land more on the 91 cents side of that range. […]

LinkedIn "won" the BrowserGate lawsuit this week. Read the ruling and it's not a vindication — it's two plaintiffs who didn't plead hard enough, and a judge already previewing how round two goes. The 6,000-extension scan didn't get ruled legal. It just didn't get ruled on […]

The FCC has been busy while I was away. Robot vacuums, lawnmowers, and solar inverters landed on the same Covered List as the router ban back in July. Router queue crossed a dozen approvals — TP-Link still has zero. Same playbook. But beware, apparently your Roomba is actually out to get you […]
