My research over the last several years has convinced me that organized tenants can transform our broken politics. But some folks don't yet discern the possibilities of tenant power. This piece offers insights on the real possibilities of power from the margins. www.marketplace.org/story/2026/0...

"I don't see what's so beautiful about it," said one Medicaid beneficiary in @povertyscholar.bsky.social's research on the "One Big, Beautiful Bill." In this @syracuse.com op-ed, Michener shares what the largest Medicaid cut in history means for the people who rely on the program. 🔗 Read today:

It's Medicaid's 61st birthday! I wrote a piece lifting up the perspectives of people who rely on it. Here's what they told me: cuts hurt people, paperwork requirements burden families, fraud is a red herring, & elected leaders are out of touch. Read more here: www.syracuse.com/opinion/2026...

As I said above : “Elected leaders are important. But it is worth interrogating the impetus to give them disproportionate weight in our theories of change. Organized tenants are winning all over the country, often in opposition to terrible leaders…organizing can prevail either way.”

Organized tenants are winning all over the country, some in places w/ terrible leaders who oppose them. I’m glad NYC faces better circumstances, but positioning powerful elites as the “key” to change undermines the full potential of democracy. Mamdani himself recognizes this & respects organizing.

The Union of Pinnacle Tenants formed in fall 2025, so it barely existed under Adams. Still, of course it matters who is in office. The Union would have had a harder fight under Cuomo. I never said otherwise. I simply emphasized that organized people w/power also matter—and we too often ignore them.

No worries. This was not a comment on the press specifically; it was a reflection on bias towards elites in the stories many folks tell & the ways many people perceive the world. The press are one source of such stories, but responsibility for elitist narratives can’t be laid entirely at their feet.
010
Jamila Michener @povertyscholar.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Also, why is your conjecture based only on what you know about Mamdani? Do you know about the tenants union? About what actually occurred? More specific & accurate knowledge fosters better understanding. Plus, Mamdani’s own “Office to Protect Tenants” has credited the tenant union. So there’s that.
0150
Jamila Michener @povertyscholar.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
You can find it hard to believe. You can also look at what actually happened, how it happened, & when it happened. It is all part of the public record. I am sure Mamdani would have done something. But the specific action he took was driven by organized tenants. What do we gain by ignoring this?

Jamila Michener @povertyscholar.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Sure, but we also need (and most fundamentally) more organized people with the power to push, hold accountable, inform, pressure (when needed) and support those leaders.

💯 And some folks forget on purpose (or at least systematically) because forgetting serves to maintain hierarchies.

You already know about Mamdani, but do you know about the incredible work of the Union of Pinnacle Tenants? And why aren’t we telling that story? Who benefits when we onscure the power of ordinary people organized for change? www.pinnacletenants.org/about-us

Jamila Michener @povertyscholar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
There is a problem with the stories we tell & the way we perceive how change happens. The Union of Pinnacle Tenants, the largest tenant-led union in NYC—are the reason Mamdani took action. Organized people power is pivotal. Top down stories of elected heroes (even ones we like) are not sufficient.

Jamila Michener @povertyscholar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Mamdani, great as he may be, was responding to the efforts of tenants, who had organized in large numbers to hold Pinnacle accountable. Elections matter and so do elected officials—but organizing and collective action matter just as much, sometimes more. It is vital to tell this full story.

I appreciate these thoughts. And yes, reframing in this way does change what the intervention looks like. That’s precisely the argument. Tenant organizing builds power, and since power is dynamic and relational, this also means redistributing it.
