If you see this, post not quite a Star Trek.
Scene from the movie Jason X. The head of KM-14, the main professor's android girlfriend , is resting on a sci-fi keyboard as a hand types near her. Her face looks sort of neutral and sort of concerned, and cables are dangling from her neck. I've been watching Friday the 13th movies all day.

Here's a handy(?) seasonal recipe courtesy of Chex Cooking the Microwave Way, published in 1979. Call me old-fashioned, but I feel like it's more convenient to just put the cake in the oven once and wait, rather than hover by the microwave to rotate the mold 1/4 turn every 3 minutes.
Front cover of Chex Cooking the Microwave Way, with the original price of 50 cents visible in the top corner. It's a black background with a photo of microwave buttons used as a table for various cooked dishes, such as muffins, coated chicken, and breakfast casserole.Recipe and photo for Pumpkin Cake, described as "A perfect ending to any meal." It's shown as a ring-shaped cake on a wooden cutting board with one slice cut out and on display. he recipe instructs you to use a 10-cup ring mold, but it's unclear what material the mold would need to be made of to microwave it. Ingredients: 1 1/3 cups all purpose flour, 1.5 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup vegetable oil, 2 Tb water, 1 cup canned pumpkin, 1.5 cups Wheat Chex cereal crushed to 1/2 cup, 1/2 cup raisins, confectioners sugar. Directions: Lightly grease 10-cup ring mold. Line bottom with lightly greased wax paper. In larger mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and spices. Add brown sugar, eggs, oil, water and pumpkin. Mix at medium speed of electric mixer 1 to 2 minutes or until thoroughly blended. Stir in Chex crumbs and raisins. Pour into mold. Microwave MEDIUM (50% power) 15 minutes, rotating 1/4 turn every 3 minutes. Microwave HIGH 3 to 5 minutes or until done. Rotate 1/4 turn every minute. Cake is done when it begins to pull away from sides of pan and top springs back when lightly touched. Let cool 10 minutes before removing from mold. Cool completely. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

It's the first Friday in October and it was nearly 90° today, so obviously we need to immerse ourselves in full Halloween mode to combat that nonsense. Now watching what is quite possibly the most perfect anthology movie ever made. 🎃
Scene from the movie Trick 'r Treat. The character of Sam, a childlike Halloween spirit with a round burlap bag head and an orange onesie body, is standing inside the bedroom of the cranky neighbor. There is a jack 'o lantern on fire behind him, and the words "trick or treat, give me something good to eat" have been scrawled all over the wall in blood.

Two-panel screen grab from the Daria episode "It Happened One Nut." In the top panel she's walking away from Kevin behind the counter at Nutty World, a mall kiosk where they both work. They're wearing aprons with the store logo and hats that look like the top half of a squirrel's head. Behind them are large barrels of nuts with labels, like Hazelnuts and Pecans. The caption on the first panel is Kevin saying, "Wait, where are you going?" In the second panel, Daria is about to walk through a door into the back room that has "Nuts Only!" written on it. She's turning back to face Kevin who is out of frame and says, "Further into my personal hell."

I have CBS on tonight and on a commercial break there was an ad for THE TRAITORS... which is an NBC show. I don't watch a lot of network TV, so I don't know how common this is, but is this how advertising works now? Are the networks not actually in competition anymore? Does anything matter?

Some real MST3K vibes here...
Screen grab from a host segment of the MST3K episode for The Time Travelers. Jonah and the bots are standing in the main room of the Satellite of Love and they're all looking at a TV screen that has come down from the ceiling to explain rules for dealing with a time portal. It uses the acronym TIME with a period between each letter. The letter E is highlighted and underneath it shows that it stands for, "Enter the Portal, Not."

What it feels like to be a skilled professional applying to jobs in 2026.
Scene from the Twilight Zone episode The Obsolete Man. A man is standing with his back to the camera in a dark room. In front of him is a long, low table, with a man in a uniform sitting at the end of it in front of a microphone. Behind that man is a very tall podium, maybe 10 or 20 feet tall, with another man in a uniform standing at the top, also with a microphone. The man on the podium is interviewing the standing man to determine whether or not he's obsolete, and thus must be eliminated.

Woke up feeling very uneasy this morning, and I can't really explain why. Nothing is differently bad (just, you know, the regular amount of perpetual bad) but I'm so out of sorts for no clear reason.
Screen grab from the game Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy on Nintendo Switch. It has a slightly cute illustrated style, and everyone's clothing looks like turn-of-the-century London (even though it's present day). The characters are standing on a shopping street in the city. On the left are a girl, boy, and hound dog, all dressed to the nines. On the right is an older man with a white mustache and hat pulled low on his forehead. His name is Stachenscarfen, and he is saying, "Quiet today, isn't it? Close your eyes, and you can almost see the eternal truths of the world unfolding before you."

I know every marketing team is being pressured to game the algorithm by any means necessary, but if you list your book like this there is a 0% chance that I'm buying it.
Screen grab of a book listing from the ThriftBooks website. It has the cover on one side, and then the title and edition info on the other. The cover is an illustration of two people sitting in a pumpkin patch, leaning on a pumpkin the size of a car, with either a sunrise or sunset above them. The title on the cover is "Let's Give 'Em Pumpkin to Talk About," by Isabelle Popp. On the other side of the page, the title is written as, "Let's Give 'em Pumpkin to Talk about: A Quirky Pumpkin Spicy Small Town Rivals to Lovers Fall Romance." The hardcover is $39.55 and the paperback is $13.65.

Yukon Cornelius from the Rankin and Bass stop-motion Rudolph special. He's a stop-motion puppet with a big, curly, red beard and sqiggly red mustache that sticks out straight to the sides. Mooncake prices skyrocketed this year, so I went with a single-serve option instead of a tin. It's red bean with a (very slight) hint of rose. I usually lean toward lotus paste filling, but I may keep red bean in rotation in the future because it's quite good. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
Close-up photo of a mooncake on a paper plate. It's a round pastry with scalloped edges and has been cooked while pressed into a decorative mold so the top is covered in intricate designs and Chinese characters.

Pro tip for seasonal drink lovers on a budget: You can get a bottle of Torani Pumpkin Pie syrup (reg or sugar-free) for home use and make your favorite coffees/teas/foods with it for pennies per serving. Trust me, you want the Pumpkin Pie and *not* the Pumpkin Spice: www.torani.com/catalogsearc...
Product photo from the Torani website for Pumpkin Pie syrup. It shows a big glass bottle of the syrup sitting on a counter, next to a slice of actual pumpkin pie on a plate.
