Making it a double feature with one of my all-time favorite haunted house movies. I would give anything to see full color photos of the extraordinary set, but, alas, they're nowhere to be found.
The four main cast members of The Haunting (1963), standing on the staircase talking with each other on their first night in the house. From left to right, they are Dr. John Markway, Luke Sannerson, Theodora, and Eleanor Lance. The two men on the left are wearing suits, Theodora is wearing a very modern black vest over a white shirt, and Eleanor is wearing a more old-fashioned blouse with a big bow tied at the neck.

It's the first Friday in October and it was nearly 90° today, so obviously we need to immerse ourselves in full Halloween mode to combat that nonsense. Now watching what is quite possibly the most perfect anthology movie ever made. 🎃
Scene from the movie Trick 'r Treat. The character of Sam, a childlike Halloween spirit with a round burlap bag head and an orange onesie body, is standing inside the bedroom of the cranky neighbor. There is a jack 'o lantern on fire behind him, and the words "trick or treat, give me something good to eat" have been scrawled all over the wall in blood.

Having just seen GODZILLA MINUS ONE, it was serendipity that I happened to rediscover what's probably my earliest drawing of Godzilla while cleaning out my parents' house. I'm not sure when it was drawn, but we're probably looking at 1976-77 or thereabouts? Who knows really.
By me, circa 1976-77 or so: A brilliantly rendered line drawing on three-quarters of a torn sheet of looseleaf lined paper of Godzilla in green attacking the combined forces of two brown tanks, three see-through helicopters (those girder/bubble-looking ones), and two equally transparent fighter planes. He's doing all this while also reeling from yellow electrical bolts from all the telephone/electric towers in front of him, and dripping blood on his claws and mouth, which is weird, since he never eats people; my young vision of him was clearly more horrific. Oh, and "GODZILLA" is written at the top in green in case you didn't get it.

We manually cleared out the label backlog last night, and I dropped off all outstanding book orders at the post office this morning. Shout out to my fabulous local postal workers, who are overworked and underpaid and still manage to radiate joy in the midst of it all.

If you ordered a book recently, thanks for your patience with fulfillment! Our shipping plugin decided to stop communicating with us and hadn't been importing orders into our label queue. The same shipping plugin that's been boasting about new AI features. I'm sure that's just a coincidence. 🙄

Today's #LastFourWatched for #filmsky #moviesky #LetterboxdFriday! From r to l: A new horror movie that was better as a YT short; a superb human drama with Godzilla in it; a disturbing literary riff (part of a box set I'm reviewing); and a classic close to my heart (& guts) to kick off October!
Four movie posters in a row. First, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), with a black and white collage of all the characters in various stages of distress and a bright green title logo at the top; next, 1985's version of THE TURN OF THE SCREW, with a young man on the left as if he's saying "ha!" His sister stands behind him in the background in a nightgown, and their dashing new teacher guy is slightly smaller on the far right looking shocked, as well he should be; then it's the superb graphic design of the 2023 GODZILLA MINUS ONE poster, with the title topped by a huge stylized G as if smeared on a window, with Godzilla himself visible inside all the letter forms; and finally the sickly yellow of a wall in 2026's BACKROOMS with a woman on the extreme right touching the wall open-mouthed almost like she's being pushed off the edge of the poster.

Flat lay photograph of a book sitting on top of an unfolded packing box. Also visible is a pair of scissors, roll of tape, and insert cards. The book is green with multiple illustrated representations of Dracula lined up in rows. The title of the book is displayed on an illustrated tombstone, and reads, "Counting Draculas: Binge-Watching the Vampire King."

I always loved Gahan Wilson’s NUTS, which I read over and over in an incomplete 1979 collection. For my birthday a couple weeks ago, @positivelynatalie.bsky.social tracked down the 2011 complete reprint of the entire strip. Nostalgic, painful, wistful, horrifying, hopeful - childhood in one book.
The hardcover 2011 edition of NUTS: A GRAPHIC NOVEL by Gahan Wilson, with “The Kid” in his huge floppy checkered hat with ear flaps behind a large red book that he’s reading eagerly or with terror…or both. Everything is in red and yellow, but two big brown acorns are on either side of the NUTS title.

To be fair, sometimes it was a very expensive CGI cutscene transporting the Doctor from one standing-talking-room to another standing-talking-room. What if actors could move around dynamically within a space and what if framing could be used to heighten the drama? We may never know.

Maybe next time the Doctor/companion could attempt to achieve something, placing them in dramatic tension with some kind of antagonist, and their reactions to adversity could tell us something about them / the human experience. OR just do another season of Four People Say Things In a Room.
