My thoughts on MaineHealth’s disastrous decision to close Miles Labor & Delivery.

I'm angry. MaineHealth ignored the voices of mothers, fathers, doctors, nurses, and an entire community by voting to close the Miles Labor and Delivery Unit at Lincoln Hospital. This marks the 12th labor and delivery ward we've lost in this state since 2015.

Time after time, rural Mainers get the same raw deal. Our voices are silenced by powerful people wearing fancy suits in air-conditioned boardrooms, people who make a lot of money cutting deals whose brutal consequences they're too far above us to ever see.

It’s past time that we fix our broken, profit-centered healthcare system that leaves many of us struggling to get care and most of us struggling to pay for it when we do.

We must pass Medicare For All. We must defeat Susan Collins – and every Trump puppet in D.C. who votes to destroy essential public services in favor of tax cuts for the billionaires and corporations.

Lincoln County, this is my message to you. You stood together, you raised your voices, and you raised hell. I am proud to stand with you all and to call you my brothers and sisters in this struggle.

Your solidarity and willingness to organize your community across partisan lines is the model for how regular people fight back against a system that’s been holding us back for too damn long.

Because here's the truth. Working Mainers are not from the left. We're not from the right. We're from the bottom. And we must rise together.
