I had no expectations going into finding emily (2026) but had an incredibly fun time, theatrical romcoms are so back

I had very little expectations going into finding emily other than "angourie rice deserved better than mean girls (2024)" but I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I loved this one. while there are a number of incredibly baffling decisions this film makes, the beauty of a good romcom is that none of that actually matters if the core romance works, and angourie rice and spike fearn have some pretty great chemistry. but for fun, here's everything dumb about this film.

there are three separate social media montages with some absolutely wild music tracks: chappell roan in a straight romance??? call me maybe in 2026??? come on what are we doing here. there's a podcast with dramatically outsized influence for an official university production. both leads are incredibly and increasingly destructive yet face minimal consequences for their actions. by the end they should both be fired and emily likely deported, how is this relationship supposed to work?? there's a strawwoman sjw stereotype who seemingly exists solely to drive the plot forward while feeling weirdly out of place with the rest of the film's politics. angourie rice's bangs and makeup are giving taylor swift. that one isn't actually a problem, I'm honestly so here for it, but I did spend the entire film thinking about it.

but the thing is, none of these are enough to ruin the film and I honestly loved the rest of it. the film looks pretty solid, it's nice to see a romcom with some actual lighting (I know I said this about one night only (2026) but my point still stands, it's dire out here now that most of the genre is made for streaming). all the characters are incredibly likeable, with a pretty solid supporting cast—shoutouts to cora kirk and prasanna puwanarakah who steal every scene they're in. while mostly standard, there are a few scenes with some fairly inventive imagery, and the pacing is kept relatively tight throughout.

As #Over/Under wraps up tomorrow, I am feeling so damn many emotions it's hard to sleep. This has been a literal life-changing game to play in and I am quite literally mourning so many of these characters who I'm not going to see again, but god, I loved them all so so much.
