Happy National Garlic 🧄 Day! Greeks & Romans loved garlic—but Mesopotamians loved it 1000s of years before them. The Greek ἄγλις (Latin alium) is an Akkadian loan word. At Pompeii, there was even a garlic seller (aliarii) workshop ( 📸 by @pompei79.bsky.social): pompeiiinpictures.com/pompeiiinpic...

DNA is not the same as kinship. Our perspective paper argues that treating genetics as the ultimate proof of identity or family can: • erase community-defined relationships • reinforce Western biases • and even cause real harm in policy + research Special Issue: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

My photo shows a painted wall fresco advertising wine for sale outside a shop known as ‘Ad Cucumas’ in ancient Herculaneum, Italy. Four coloured wine jugs are shown in a row. From left to right: green, blue, red, and white. They have a round body with a tall neck and a single handle. There is a price written beneath each jug, which decreases from left to right.

Exactly - speaking as someone who has been so lucky to study the population of central Italy in the Iron Age and Imperial periods, his understanding of the people of the Rome is woefully inaccurate and serves as intentional dog-whistle for the great replacement theory he promotes
