my recently played is very satisfying right now

There's a nice symmetry to it thanks to AM2R's cover art being based on Metroid II's, and with the blue Fusion Suit Samus being in the middle between her normal suits

really looking at the genre tags on backloggd for the first time and they're insane - no horror, roguelike, survival, open world, or mmo tags - action = "brawlers" - strategy, tactical, real-time strategy, and turn-based strategy as separate tags - stealth = "tactical" - "indie" is a genre

now playing AM2R for the first time. very pleased that i got it to work on steamOS, even if it took the fairly laborious process of downloading a linux build through the desktop mode terminal and fiddling with controller settings a lot. still doesn't show the right button icons, but whatever

zero mission replay complete. i have officially beaten every nintendo-developed 2D metroid game fast enough to get samus to take her helmet off but not fast or thorough enough for her to take the rest of her armor off, back to back to back to back to back

yeah i'm partially justifying the purchase just because it's a fully functional linux pc i can have as a backup if my laptop goes kaput. (and frankly in this market replacing my laptop would cost way more) also emudeck does have cloud saves, but i think it's for patreon backers only or something?

emudeck does have an import option in setup that's probably way faster, but my rom library on steam deck was missing a lot of stuff i'd downloaded later, and also the usb-C flash drive i can plug into my steam deck is VERY slow, so i just started the process from scratch with a hard drive

i can also schedule my own custom sales, but 4-5 official valve sales spread throughout the year (one of which even overlaps with our anniversary) is probably enough? so that it's discounted regularly but we're not devaluing the game by making it feel like it's ALWAYS on sale? idk

the flip side of this, of course, is that i have absolutely played some roguelite twists on other games that had great core mechanics but felt like they didn't need to be roguelites. like it was more fun for the designer to conceive the procgen and loot pool than for me to actually play it

like you can come up with a billion crazy skills/modifiers/loot drops/whatever and instead of figuring out exactly how to dole them out to players you just dump them in a randomized loot pool, limit how many they can get per run, and bam, endless replayability

really impressed with how the amnesia fortnight prototypes turned out this time after only two weeks of work. like obviously they're all rough and slightly jank proofs of concept, they always are, but i feel like they're more polished than they have been historically

i feel like this is kind of a recurring issue with the takahashi series i've seen, where he kind of overthinks the whole process of how and why the monsters attack people, what the stakes are if they win, and what the riders have to do to stop them

also i need to watch more of kuuga, but my-th episode 4 revolving around an actual investigation into the monster of the week was the most obvious it's been so far that they got back the head writer of kuuga. very very fun episode
