Something I didn’t know; Tornado Red will be a colour option once the ID Polo #GTI - also ‘on tour’, along with the #IDCross - has launched in early 2027 (UK). Python Yellow Metallic is the standard colour. The car arrives in showrooms in November; I’m excited to drive it in October. #VW #IDPolo

Finally! After a year of teases, spy shots and reveals, I finally saw the new #Volkswagen #IDPolo for myself on Saturday at the ID Polo Roadshow in Milton Keynes. It looks really fantastic, and the return to ‘true’ Volkswagen values is clear, from the operational tech to the use of materials.

Mine went up £100 to almost match your last year’s total. There is a non-fault ‘accident’ (suspension damaged by Cadent roadworks), but surprisingly, the bump that wrote off my 6N Polo GTI is no longer on the policy; came off this year. 16 years NCD, too I’d say yours is a result!

There is that. Although the aircraft-style locker at the back is removable (I think). And rear passengers appreciate the air con! Took it to Guernsey in June, and it was brilliant. We wanted a petrol as we’d read about turbo blades disintegrating and imploding the turbo, so keep an eye on that…

Only thing we’ve had an issue with is the battery, but that’s not the car’s (90k miles) fault. Lots of clonks from the front (Stu B says link bushes?), but always passes MoT. Most crippling thing is VED: £460! Modutop is ace. We were very lucky to find a non-diesel, and with that option! #Citroen

Which I don’t get. Non-car people wouldn’t care, but that car has such an enthusiast following, it seems odd that that decision was taken. There are plenty of earlier Mk1s around in the community. I sourced an ‘S’-plate one for a Classic Cars magazine group test last year! #VWGolf #GTI

Interesting. Black plates on a Granada, too. To make matters worse, the same #Corrado appears later in the same episode with a different 'C'-plate, and if you look very carefully, it’s a VR6, which didn't arrive until 1992... #Volkswagen #VW

Oh, I hate being a nerd sometimes. But TV production staff make picking holes easy. Watching ‘The Bombing of Pan-Am 103’, I spotted a #Corrado parked outside the police station. It would have been current (just) in 1988, but why backdate it to 1985/6 with a ‘C’-plate registration? #Volkswagen

The latest Polo naturally had a lot more safety equipment than its predecessor, while the SE's roomy interior provided another example of the apparently randomly-coloured fabric that was popular with manufacturers in the 1990s. The brochure called this Reflection trim 'chic'.

While it was less characterful than the old model - particularly the latter's much-loved 'breadvan' version - the new generation finally brought VW into line with rivals thanks to the availability of a 5-door Polo for the first time. Even in SE trim the Polo's specification was hardly over-generous.

Having left the Polo mk2 in production for what seemed like an eternity, VW finally made a bid to get back to the front of the supermini class with the third generation, launched in 1994. This 1996 UK brochure features a locally-developed SE 1.4 model, adding extra equipment. #carbluesky
