A chinkin piece depicting Captain Ahab by chinkin artist Kasuga. Simply beautiful. Chinkin involves carving directly into the urushi surface, so there is very little room for error. We hoped to apply this design to a pen, but discovered that working on such a curved surface would be very difficult.

Sweet, strange uncitizens: ONCE I WAS MADE OF EARTH is here, an epic fantasy that's been ratling in my brain for years now and that I'm putting out into the world serially outside of the capitalist publishing apparatus. Share, and read, and comment. archiveofourown.org/works/91618061
The painting "The Moment" by James Warden, with the text "Once I Was Made of Earth" on it by Rivers Solomon. The painting is in the romantic style, quite dramatic and dark in tone if not colour, with a horse rearing with fear in its eyes as a snake launches to bite it, against a back drop of pink and blue mountains.

The Legend of the White Snake is one of Chinese folklore’s most tender tragedies. Bai Suzhen, a serpent spirit who takes human form, falls in love with the scholar Xu Xian, turning fate into devotion. But their union unsettles the mortal and spiritual worlds. 1/2 #folklore #art
🎨 《白蛇傳》戴敦邦 In the city of Zhenjiang during the Song Dynasty, Bai Suzhen was a thousand-year-old snake demon. In order to repay the life-saving grace bestowed by the scholar Xu Xian in a past life, she transformed into human form to repay the kindness. Later, she encountered the green snake spirit, Xiaoqing, and the two became companions. Bai Suzhen used her magical powers and clever tactics to get acquainted with Xu Xian and eventually married him. After their marriage, the monk Fahai from the Jinshan Temple warned Xu Xian that Bai Suzhen was a snake demon, causing Xu Xian to have doubts. Later, following Fahai's advice, Xu Xian made Bai Suzhen drink wine laced with Realgar on the Dragon Boat Festival, forcing her to reveal her true form, which frightened Xu Xian to death. 1/2🎨 《白蛇傳》戴敦邦 Bai Suzhen ascended to the Heavenly Court, stole the herbs of immortality, and revived Xu Xian. Fahai deceived Xu Xian to Jinshan Temple and detained him. Bai Suzhen, along with Xiaoqing, confronted Fahai, causing floods in the temple, inadvertently harming other living beings. Bai Suzhen, for violating heavenly laws, was imprisoned in a bowl and suppressed beneath the Leifeng Pagoda after giving birth to her child. Later, Bai Suzhen's son grew up and became the top scholar. He worshipped his mother at the pagoda, rescuing her, and the family reunited. Even the lovable Xiaoqing found her significant other. 2/2
