Springtime in Lagos by Jenny Cox

Violet clouds mist a gentle greet -
honey to musk,
jacarandas
crushed to rot on cobbled streets.

This week's waterford is a winner of the 2026 annual waterford competition, as chosen by Molly Twomey. It appears in "Duanaire - collected waterfords", the world's first poetry collection of waterfords which is edited by Kevin MacAlan, and features over 300 poems written by more than 90 poets from all over the globe. Image of the book cover for "Duanaire - collected waterfords" - edited by Kevin MacAlan and published by West Waterford Press. Black text on a mid-blue background. The front cover image (colour photograph by Kevin MacAlan) is a view looking out towards the sea across sand, with the coast on the horizon in the distance.

Text on the back covers reads: In your hands is a collection of over 300 waterfords penned by more than 90 poets from all around the world. The waterford, now frequently called "the Irish haiku" has become a global sensation. It is a positive poem of 4 lines, 8-4-4-8 syllables, the fourth line rhyming with the first, and the third line rhyming with the second. Deceptively simple. The waterford's versatility is one of its great attractions, not only to read, but also to write. Only 24 syllables, and 800 years younger then both the limerick and the haiku, the waterford is already finding its place.

Waterford Rhyme

The waterford is hard to write,
you have to count
the right amount
of syllables and lines; it's tight.

"Move over limerick, the waterford is here!" Waterford News and Star
"It really does roll off the tongue easier than a limerick." Kyle Butler, WLR FM
"Unlike the mean limerick, the waterford is all about being nice!" Dungarvan Leader
